Pregnant Woman Tortured to Death in Chhattisgarh; Husband Absconding

The CSR Journal Magazine

A troubling case involving alleged domestic violence and murder has been reported from Surguja district in Chhattisgarh. A 23-year-old pregnant woman named Heerabai was allegedly attacked and killed by her husband, Pradeep Agaria, in Bhithikala village. The victim was a resident of Sakariya village, located in Lakhanpur.

According to police reports and testimonies from family members, the brutal assault took place within the confines of their home. Following the attack, the husband reportedly transported Heerabai’s body tied to a motorcycle to the Medical College Hospital in Ambikapur, attempting to suggest that she had succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident. However, medical staff pronounced her dead upon arrival, after which Pradeep Agaria reportedly fled the scene.

Autopsy Findings Raise Serious Concerns

Authorities, including Station House Officer CP Tiwari, stated that the accused initially tried to depict the incident as accidental. Nonetheless, a postmortem examination and forensic investigations revealed extensive signs of violence. Medical professionals conducting the autopsy on May 15 confirmed that Heerabai was approximately three months pregnant at the time of her death.

The forensic team reported the discovery of a nearly 27-centimetre-long iron file inserted into her private parts. Furthermore, the autopsy presented evidence of multiple severe injuries across her body, with considerable trauma to her head resulting from repeated blows with a heavy wooden stick that caused fractures to her skull. Medical experts determined that the victim sustained at least 18 significant injury marks entirely over her body.

Based on the injuries observed in the abdomen and thighs, there are indications that this object may have been forcibly inserted, leading to severe internal damage and ultimately the death of her unborn child. The head of the forensic department, Dr. Santu Bag, highlighted the serious nature of the injuries discovered during the examination.

History of Domestic Violence Alleged

Family members of Heerabai alleged that Pradeep Agaria exhibited a pattern of violent behaviour towards her and had previously assaulted her with a sharp weapon. They claimed that numerous complaints had been lodged by villagers regarding his aggressive conduct. The couple, who had reportedly married for love, shared four young children: the eldest around four years, another three years old, and younger twins approximately one-and-a-half years old. Heerabai was reportedly expecting her fifth child.

Witnesses mentioned that all four children were present in the house during the time of the assault and cried for help, but no neighbours intervened. While they were taken to the hospital with their mother, the children informed local residents that she had been attacked, prompting immediate reaction from her family who subsequently rushed to the medical facility.

As of now, police have confirmed that Pradeep Agaria remains at large, and a search operation is currently underway to locate and apprehend him.
