PM Modi Leads Expansion of Railway Network Similar to Vajpayee’s Highway Revolution

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is driving a significant enhancement of India’s railway infrastructure, likening it to the highway improvements initiated by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Minister outlined ambitions for a “four-lane railway network,” with investments surpassing ₹1 lakh crore earmarked for modernising Odisha’s rail connectivity.

Vaishnaw expressed, “Just as Atal Bihari Vajpayee pioneered the four-lane highway network across the country, our respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now advancing the four-lane railway network.” This statement highlights the government’s commitment to improving transport efficiency and boosting connectivity throughout the nation.

Key Projects to Enhance Connectivity in Odisha

Vaishnaw spoke about the vital infrastructure projects that will directly affect Odisha, particularly stressing the importance of the Howrah-Chennai route. He elaborated on two specific initiatives: the Kharagpur-Bhadrak-Ranital fourth line and the Bhadrak-Haridaspur fourth line. According to him, these developments will improve train operation flow and reduce travel time, which is expected to permit the introduction of additional services to Delhi and other states.

The Minister also highlighted the urgent need for enhanced connectivity to meet the growing industrial and passenger demands in the region. He remarked on the Haridaspur-Paradip line, which was initially approved to facilitate traffic from North Odisha and Jharkhand, noting that further infrastructure measures are being considered to support additional regions.

Vaishnaw pointed out the necessity of expanding the Cuttack-Paradeep line, indicating that it is crucial to simultaneously accommodate traffic from Central Odisha, Western Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. He confirmed plans for expanding this line to four tracks, particularly focusing on mitigating congestion in Cuttack.

Government Investment and Economic Impact

In his remarks, Vaishnaw underscored the scale of the central government’s financial commitment to Odisha, stating that the substantial investment will transform the logistics framework of the region. The Minister indicated that investments exceeding ₹1 lakh crore are aimed at fundamentally reshaping Odisha’s railway landscape, offering significant benefits to its population of 4.5 crore individuals.

Earlier on the same day, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, which is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four railway projects with a cumulative expenditure of around ₹9,450 crore. The projects include the Kharagpur-Bhadrak (Ranital) fourth line, the Bhadrak-Haridaspur fourth line, and others that will collectively enhance railway functionality.

According to an official announcement, these initiatives are expected to increase line capacities substantially, resulting in improved operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. The multi-tracking strategies introduced are anticipated to streamline operations and reduce congestion effectively.

These initiatives align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a revitalised India designed to stimulate self-reliance among regional populations, thereby fostering opportunities for employment and self-employment through comprehensive development efforts.
