Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 2,722 newly constructed flats and laid the foundation for an additional 6,632 flats as part of the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment project in New Delhi. This initiative, worth Rs 15,200 crore, is aimed at modernizing aging government housing colonies across the capital. The redevelopment plan targets seven specific colonies, including Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Nauroji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Thyagraj Nagar, Sriniwaspuri, and Mohammadpur, covering approximately 537 acres of land.
Many of the existing residences in these areas have been deemed dilapidated, with nearly 40 percent classified as uninhabitable. The redevelopment effort is designed to alleviate the housing shortfall for over 20,000 central government employees by replacing outdated low-rise buildings with contemporary high-rise residential complexes. Once completed, the project is expected to deliver more than 21,000 new housing units, alongside enhanced infrastructure and public amenities.
Self-Financing Model for Sustainable Development
Officials have indicated that this redevelopment initiative is being pursued through a self-financing model, eliminating the need for public funds. Approximately 69.41 acres, or around 12.9 percent of the total area, will be utilized for commercial and residential purposes to finance the overall redevelopment. Revenue generated from this land monetization is projected to exceed ₹35,100 crore, adequately covering the estimated redevelopment costs of roughly ₹32,800 crore. This model is designed to ensure that the project does not strain government finances while potentially generating a surplus of over ₹2,300 crore.
Metro Projects to Enhance Connectivity in Delhi
On March 8, Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate and lay the groundwork for new Delhi Metro projects valued at approximately ₹18,300 crore. This includes the unveiling of two new corridors: the Majlis Park-Maujpur Babarpur (Pink Line) corridor spanning around 12.3 kilometers and the Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park (Magenta Line) corridor of approximately 9.9 kilometers. The improved connectivity is set to benefit numerous regions in the capital, including Burari, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, Madhuban Chowk, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalaswa, and Majlis Park.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for three more corridors under Phase V-A of the Delhi Metro. These new segments will cover a total route length of around 16.10 kilometers and include connections from R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1, and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve connectivity within the national capital, particularly for commuters traveling between Noida, South Delhi, and the airport.
