India’s Women’s 4x400m Relay Team Secures First Athletics Gold at Asian Games 2026

India secured its inaugural athletics gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 through the outstanding performance of its women’s 4x400m relay team. The quartet, comprising Kiran, Machettira Poovamma, Prachi, and Vithya Ramraj, claimed victory in the final held on September 29, 2026. They clocked a time of 3:29.69, finishing ahead of Bahrain, which earned silver with a time of 3:30.21. China completed the podium by taking bronze with a time of 3:31.02.

Day of Multiple Medals for India

The success of the relay team contributed to a remarkable Day 10 for India at the Asian Games 2026, where the country amassed a total of eight medals across various sports, including shooting, athletics, and boxing. The day proved particularly fruitful as India attained two golds, one silver, and five bronze medals. The women’s 4x400m relay gold was the second for India on that day, further enhancing the nation’s standing in athletics at the Games.

Earlier achievements included Neeru Dhanda’s groundbreaking win in the individual trap event. Dhanda made history by becoming the first Indian woman to take home an individual medal in this discipline, finishing first with a score of 28 out of 30. Following her in second place was China’s Sun Yunong, who secured silver with a score of 26, while UAE’s Hajar Abdulmalik claimed bronze with 21 out of 25.

In the team event for women’s trap, India’s contingent of Neeru Dhanda, Aashima Ahlawat, and Manisha Keer followed up on their individual successes, earning a silver medal, further solidifying India’s shooting prowess.

Athletics Achievements Continue

In addition to the relay victory, Indian athlete Gulveer Singh added to the nation’s medal tally by winning bronze in the men’s 5000m event. Singh recorded a time of 13:32.75, thereby achieving a commendable third-place finish. Furthermore, India’s mixed 4x100m relay team, consisting of Gurindervir Singh, Sneha Sathyanarayan, Animesh Kujur, and Harita Bhadra, also brought home a bronze medal, finishing with a time of 41.06 seconds.

The day continued to showcase India’s athletic talent as Pooja secured bronze in the women’s high jump, recording a best clearance height of 1.84 metres. This achievement demonstrated the depth of talent within the Indian athletics contingent.

In the domain of boxing, Indian athlete Narender Berwal won his second consecutive bronze medal in the men’s +90 kg category. He reached this accolade after being bested in his semifinal bout, but his performance throughout the tournament remains commendable, contributing to India’s overall medal tally.
