External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed grave concerns regarding an imminent “major food crisis” that could arise from ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Iran-Gulf region. During a dialogue held by the Asia Society in New York on Monday, Jaishankar highlighted how these conflicts are aggravating existing fertiliser shortages, which could have serious implications for food security globally.

According to Jaishankar, the interplay of rising energy prices, food supply issues, fertiliser availability, and financial instability is creating extreme pressure on economies in the Global South. He stated, “The combined effect is proving to be very very stressful for countries that are already vulnerable,” stressing the need for urgent action to address these compounded challenges.

Jaishankar pointed out that major grain exporters are facing significant disruptions in their ability to send shipments, particularly from the Black Sea region. The conflict in Ukraine has severely limited the flow of critical food supplies, further jeopardising food security in various nations.

Energy Concerns Amplify Economic Strain

Jaishankar further elaborated on the pressing issue of energy constraints, describing the current market environment as “very tight.” He warned that political actions regarding oil supplies could exacerbate the situation, potentially driving up prices at a time when stability is crucial. He noted that “if people play politics with it, that adds to the complications in the market,” highlighting the interconnectedness of energy politics and economic crises.

The minister attributed the rising costs of energy to both market dynamics and geopolitical situations, indicating that the two are interlinked. He warned that this dual pressure could create an “aggravated crisis” affecting not just energy availability but also food production and financial markets.

Jaishankar raised alarms about the potential global repercussions of these situations, noting that they could lead to long-term instability. This instability may manifest in various forms, including economic distress and political instability, as seen in the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict, where neighbouring regions experienced turbulence.

Call for International Solidarity and Awareness

Jaishankar urged an awareness among policymakers about their decisions and their effects on the Global South. He stated, “Countries should not be so self-centred that they ignore the larger consequences of their actions.” He emphasised the need for “sound common sense” to ensure that basic needs are not overlooked, appealling for solidarity and mutual responsibility in addressing global challenges.

He expressed his concern that a lack of coordination and understanding among nations could lead to unjust hardships for countries already facing significant challenges. Highlighting the intricacies of balancing independence and global interdependence, Jaishankar remarked that while some nations might effectively navigate this landscape, others may struggle more substantially.

Jaishankar concluded his remarks by stating that the situation represents a complex matrix, wherein some countries may find it necessary to adjust their positions or policies. The call for greater autonomy among nations indicates a desire for a cooperative framework to mitigate risks stemming from energy shortages and food insecurity.
