Renault has announced the upcoming launch of a strong-hybrid variant of the Duster, scheduled for October 17. This new version aims to enhance the Duster range by integrating a hybrid powertrain that enables significant electric driving capability. Renault claims that the new model can operate in electric mode for up to 80 per cent of city driving, highlighting its suitability for urban environments where electric propulsion can be maximised.

The strong-hybrid Duster will join the existing line-up of powertrains, which includes 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. With the growing demand for electrified SUVs, the introduction of this hybrid option marks a significant expansion of Renault’s offerings in India.

Furthermore, the hybrid Duster will provide consumers with an alternative powertrain that prioritises efficiency without compromising performance. This reflects a broader industry trend towards sustainable mobility solutions in various vehicle segments.

Technical Specifications of the Duster Hybrid

The Duster E-Tech hybrid combines a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack. The first electric motor generates 49 hp and is responsible for driving the wheels, while the second functions as a 20 hp motor-generator. Together, this hybrid system produces a total output of 160 bhp and 172 Nm of torque, transmitted through an eight-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

This system is designed to optimise electric propulsion, particularly in city traffic, where Renault asserts that the vehicle can predominantly operate in electric mode. The petrol engine is intended to activate only when additional power is necessary or when the battery requires charging, thereby enhancing fuel efficiency during urban commutes.

The Duster’s hybrid system distinguishes itself from those in competing models, such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, by employing a multi-mode hybrid transmission with fixed gear ratios. This allows for a flexible transition between electric-only and petrol-driven modes, tailored to driving conditions.

Existing Engine Options and Market Context

The new-generation Duster, launched in India earlier in 2026, currently offers two turbo-petrol engines. The entry-level model features a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates 100 bhp and 160 Nm, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The more powerful 1.3-litre variant delivers 163 bhp and 280 Nm of torque and is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DCT automatic transmission.

With the introduction of the hybrid model, Renault is entering a competitive segment that includes established strong-hybrid options from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. The new Duster hybrid will occupy the top tier of the engine line-up, offering consumers an energy-efficient choice within the existing petrol-powered options, as Renault has opted against providing diesel engines for the Indian market.

The Duster continues to feature an SUV-oriented design, with a ground clearance of 212 mm and a boot capacity of 518 litres. Inside, it includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, and additional premium features such as ventilated front seats and a 360-degree camera.
