Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the SEMICON India 2026 exhibition on September 17, where he participated in discussions with exhibitors prior to officially opening the event at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Delhi. The exhibition, scheduled from September 17 to 19, aims to enhance industry interaction, shape policy directions, and foster international collaborations.

Objectives and Features of the Event

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has reported that the conference is co-organised by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), MeitY, and the global industry body SEMI. This year’s theme, “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem,” is expected to attract considerable attention.

An estimated 600 exhibitors will showcase their innovations across a space of 15,000 square metres, with around 300 international firms participating. The event will feature contributions from over 150 speakers and include six country pavilions and 12 state government pavilions, focusing on startups, student hackathons, and workforce development initiatives.

Additionally, the exhibition will officially review the progress made in semiconductor manufacturing. The Union government has approved 12 semiconductor projects as part of the Semicon India Programme. Of these, three units under the first phase, Semicon 1.0, have commenced commercial production, while the Union Cabinet has sanctioned the next phase, Semicon 2.0, which is built around six core pillars.

Value Chain and Talent Development

The event intends to adopt a holistic approach to the semiconductor value chain, highlighting advancements from semiconductor materials to design and advanced packaging systems. The Ministry has articulated plans for a new ‘Sand to Silicon to Systems’ Value Chain Experience, which will offer visitors a comprehensive overview of the semiconductor ecosystem and illustrate India’s growing capabilities across various stages of manufacturing.

The Startup Pavilion will spotlight approximately 40 startups, while the Workforce Development Pavilion will focus on fostering talent, skills, and career prospects within the microelectronics sector. This structure aims to attract investments and cultivate partnerships between local and global enterprises, reinforcing India’s status as a reliable player in the semiconductor market.

Key domestic and international companies, including ASML, Applied Materials, Teradyne, Infineon, Jabil, IBM Research, and several others, are expected to participate in the exhibition and strategic roundtables. These gatherings will facilitate discussions on technology collaborations and supply-chain linkages, further enhancing the engagement between the Indian semiconductor sector and global industry leaders.
