Shubman Gill and KL Rahul Excluded from Final Two ODIs Against New Zealand

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the squads for the upcoming One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches against New Zealand. Shubman Gill will captain India in the first three ODIs before departing to prepare for two crucial Tests that follow. These Tests are significant for India’s aspirations to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Shreyas Iyer will take over as captain for the fourth and fifth ODIs.

The ODI series is scheduled to commence on November 4 and will conclude on November 15. The first Test match is set to begin in Wellington on November 19. Players who are released after the initial three ODIs are expected to participate in the third and final unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A, which is slated to start on November 7.

In addition to Gill, KL Rahul will also miss the last two ODIs against New Zealand. Jasprit Bumrah, who has not been included in the ODI squad, is expected to play solely in the Test matches. Bumrah last featured in a Test against South Africa in November 2022, where India lost the two-match series 2-0.

Fitness Concerns and Player Availability

The inclusion of Prasidh Krishna in the ODI squad for the first three matches is contingent upon receiving fitness clearance. Rishabh Pant, who was ruled out of the first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand A due to a left side strain, has been named in the Test squad, although his final availability will depend on his recovery progress. Allrounder Hardik Pandya, who has not participated in any competitive matches since IPL 2026, is still working towards regaining full fitness and is not part of the ODI squad.

Initially, the series between India and New Zealand was scheduled to consist of three ODIs, but it has been extended to five matches due to the popularity of players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This series is likely to be their last tour of New Zealand, adding further significance to the matches.

Pacer Auqib Nabi, who had an impressive performance in the last Ranji Trophy season with 60 wickets, has been included in the squads for the fourth and fifth ODIs. Meanwhile, Akash Deep has been added to the Test squad, where he is expected to gain valuable experience in New Zealand conditions, likely participating in the first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand A.
