Sabyasachi Mukherjee Hosts Diwali Celebration at New York’s Met Museum

The CSR Journal Magazine

Diwali celebrations have reached New York City, thanks to renowned fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who hosted a lavish gathering at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This event marked a significant cultural exchange, bringing Indian festive traditions to one of the world’s most iconic art institutions. The Met, known for its annual Met Gala, provided a stunning backdrop for this celebration.

Sabyasachi, who recently made a return to New York Fashion Week after nearly two decades, has established a flagship store in the city. His Diwali celebration not only showcased the vibrancy of Indian culture but also highlighted India’s increasing prominence in the global luxury market.

The event attracted a host of notable guests, including actress Rani Mukerji, designer Masaba Gupta, entrepreneur Anjula Acharia, and actor Kal Penn. This gathering served as a platform for showcasing Indian fashion and festive spirit in a prominent international setting.

Fashion Highlights of the Evening

Rani Mukerji, a close associate of Sabyasachi, attended the celebration in an elegant satin saree complemented by a sleeveless blouse. Her oversized glasses and sparkling silver bag added a chic touch to her ensemble. Meanwhile, Masaba Gupta turned heads in a white corset paired with a draped skirt-cum-saree, featuring a striking red border reminiscent of the traditional Bengali laal paar shada saree. She accessorised with a maroon bag from Sabyasachi and a vibrant necklace, enhancing her look.

Sabyasachi himself donned a black bandhgala with white trousers, playfully accentuated by bright pink socks peeking from beneath his shoes. The evening was a showcase of stunning lehengas, sarees, and the designer’s signature embellished long jackets, with many guests opting for his creations to celebrate the occasion.

The decor of the event featured a visually striking grazing table that was both a feast for the eyes and the palate. Dramatic floral arrangements, cascading pomegranates, and a rich array of fresh produce created a lush, garden-inspired atmosphere. The colour palette of rich reds, deep greens, and earthy tones contributed to an opulent festive ambience.

Previous Diwali Celebrations at The Met

While Sabyasachi’s Diwali gathering has garnered significant attention, it is not the first time the Metropolitan Museum of Art has celebrated this festival. The museum has previously hosted public Diwali festivities, including a notable programme in 2014 that attracted over 800 attendees. Additionally, a family-oriented celebration took place in 2015, further establishing The Met as a venue for cultural celebrations.

This recent event, however, stands out due to Sabyasachi’s unique blend of Indian craftsmanship and festive grandeur, which brought a fresh perspective to the museum’s celebrations. His ability to merge traditional elements with contemporary fashion has made a lasting impact, showcasing the richness of Indian culture on an international stage.

As the evening unfolded, it became clear that Sabyasachi’s vision for the Diwali celebration was not just about fashion but also about fostering cultural connections. The presence of a lifelike peacock as part of the decor exemplified the attention to detail that characterises Sabyasachi’s work, leaving guests in awe of the artistic expression that defined the night.
