India Concludes Asian Para Games Badminton Campaign with 16 Medals, Including 3 Golds

The CSR Journal Magazine

India wrapped up its badminton campaign at the Asian Para Games on October 6, 2026, achieving a commendable total of 16 medals, including three golds. The performance marked a successful conclusion to the event, with notable contributions from athletes like Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan. The overall tally comprised three gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals, although it fell short of the 21 medals secured during the 2022 edition held in Hangzhou.

Nitesh Kumar, the reigning champion from the Paris Paralympics, and debutant Naveen Sivakumar both clinched gold in their respective men’s singles categories. Thulasimathi, who also excelled, brought home one gold and two silver medals, solidifying her status as a key player in the Indian contingent.

Nitesh Kumar’s Triumph in Men’s Singles

Nitesh Kumar initiated India’s gold rush by defeating fellow Indian Pramod Bhagat in the men’s singles SL3 final with scores of 21-18 and 21-16. This victory not only secured him another continental title but also highlighted his remarkable skill in the sport. Bhagat, who had previously won gold in the 2018 and 2022 editions, had to settle for silver this time around.

After his victory, Nitesh expressed his satisfaction, noting the significance of winning against a strong competitor like Bhagat. He reflected on his previous close encounter in which he had lost, making this win particularly special for him. Following the singles event, Nitesh teamed up with Thulasimathi for the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 final. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure another gold, losing to Indonesia’s Leani Ratri Oktila and Hikmat Ramdani in a closely contested match.

Naveen Sivakumar also made headlines by winning gold in the men’s singles SL4 final, defeating Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan with scores of 21-9 and 21-17. This victory marked a significant achievement for Naveen, who had prepared for the event as if it were just another tournament, aiming to avoid pressure and focus on his performance.

Thulasimathi’s Outstanding Performance

Thulasimathi Murugesan’s performance was equally impressive, as she secured gold in the women’s doubles SL3-SU5 alongside partner Manasi Joshi. The duo triumphed over China’s Yang Qiuxia and Xiao Zuxian with scores of 21-16 and 21-13, showcasing their coordination and teamwork. Thulasimathi also reached the finals in the women’s singles SU5 category but was unable to secure gold, losing to Yang.

Her achievements at the Games included one gold and two silver medals, reflecting her versatility and endurance as she competed in three events in one day. Thulasimathi emphasised the importance of effective communication and training with her partner, which contributed to their success against a formidable Chinese team.

In addition to the gold medals, India’s Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan added another silver to the tally in the women’s singles SH6 category, although she was defeated by China’s Li Fengmei in the final. This further contributed to India’s overall medal count at the Games.

Naveen’s Journey and Future Aspirations

Naveen’s gold medal at the Asian Para Games marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. He has previously achieved notable success on the international circuit, including a victory at the Uganda Para Badminton International in 2022 and a silver medal at the 2026 BWF Para Badminton World Championships in Bahrain. His aspirations extend beyond this event, as he aims for success in future championships and the Olympics.

Meanwhile, for Pramod Bhagat, the men’s singles SL3 final concluded a remarkable run in which he had previously claimed gold in two consecutive Asian Para Games. This year, however, he had to accept silver as Nitesh claimed the title. The competition underscored the high level of talent present in Indian badminton and the promising future of its athletes.
