Haryana Police Arrests Four Involved in Rs 90,000 UPI Fraud

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Haryana police have apprehended four individuals allegedly connected to an inter-state gang implicated in a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) fraud case. This development follows a complaint lodged by a resident of Mindkola, who reported the illegal transfer of Rs 90,000 from his bank account on July 22. The arrests were executed by a team from Palwal police in Uttarakhand, as confirmed by officials from the police department.

The accused were brought before a local court on Tuesday, where they were remanded into police custody for two days. This period is intended to facilitate further investigation and recovery of the stolen funds. The case was initiated after Brajlal, the complainant, discovered that cybercriminals had accessed his bank account and executed the fraudulent transaction.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Rs 50,000 was transferred to the account of Maruf Ali, while Rs 40,000 was sent to Maninder Singh’s account. An FIR was subsequently filed at the cybercrime police station in Palwal, prompting a thorough investigation by the authorities.

Investigation and Arrests Conducted in Uttarakhand

In the course of the investigation, police utilised technical evidence to trace the accused individuals. On Monday, a raid was conducted in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, leading to the arrest of Ali and Singh, who have been identified as the primary suspects in the case. Following their apprehension, two additional suspects, Alam Khan and Vasu Madak, were also arrested. All four individuals are residents of Rudrapur.

According to a senior investigating officer, the police are currently focused on recovering the embezzled funds and exploring the broader network associated with the alleged gang. The officer stated, “All four accused were produced before the local court today and were taken on two days of police remand to facilitate the recovery of the swindled funds and to investigate the broader network.” This indicates the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching the case.

Palwal Superintendent of Police Deepti Garg has emphasised the importance of public awareness regarding cyber fraud. She urged individuals not to share sensitive information such as bank account details, one-time passwords, or UPI information with unknown persons. Garg highlighted that victims of cyber fraud should promptly contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or file a complaint at the nearest cyber police station.

Public Advisory Issued by Police

The ongoing investigation aims not only to recover the lost funds but also to dismantle the wider network of the alleged gang. The police have reiterated their commitment to combatting cybercrime and ensuring the safety of citizens in the digital realm. The four accused remain in police custody as investigators continue their efforts to gather evidence and uncover additional details related to the case.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of cyber fraud without delay. The proactive measures taken by the police serve as a reminder of the growing threat posed by cybercriminals and the necessity for individuals to safeguard their personal information. As investigations progress, the police are hopeful of uncovering further connections that may lead to additional arrests.

The case underscores the need for increased awareness and education regarding cyber safety, as more individuals engage with digital payment systems. The police are determined to act swiftly to protect citizens from such fraudulent activities and to promote a safer online environment.
