Centre Approves Bullet Train Connectivity to Guwahati, Marking Significant Step for Northeast

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Centre has approved the inclusion of Guwahati in its ambitious bullet train project aimed at connecting New Delhi with the Northeast region. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this development on Tuesday, highlighting that while the approval is a positive advancement, numerous technical and logistical aspects of the project still need to be addressed. The Chief Minister noted that this initiative represents a crucial first step toward enhancing transportation links in the region.

Challenges Involved In Project Execution

Sarma elaborated on the complexities associated with the project, particularly the need to construct a new railway line specifically for bullet trains. He identified the Siliguri Corridor, commonly referred to as the Chicken’s Neck, as a significant challenge due to its strategic sensitivity. This corridor, which serves as a vital connection between the Northeast and the rest of India, is notably narrow, measuring only around 22 kilometres in some areas and as little as 16 kilometres in others. The existing infrastructure, including a National Highway and railway line, complicates the construction of the new bullet train track.

The Chief Minister indicated that the government would need to explore options for the bullet train track, considering whether it could be built underground or elevated. He emphasised that bullet trains cannot share tracks with existing rail services, necessitating the development of an entirely new corridor. This requirement will significantly impact the project’s overall cost, with estimates suggesting that investments could be two to three times higher than initially anticipated, depending on the chosen construction methods and technologies.

In his statements, Sarma acknowledged the initial hurdles faced by the proposal. He credited discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and a request made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the eventual approval to extend bullet train connectivity to Guwahati. The Chief Minister expressed his intent to engage further with the Railway Minister during his upcoming visit to Delhi to delve into the technical specifics and proposed alignment of the project.

Future Steps For Implementation

The Chief Minister described the approval as a landmark decision for both Assam and the broader Northeast region. He recognised the contributions of Prime Minister Modi and Railway Minister Vaishnaw in facilitating this development. However, Sarma cautioned that this approval is merely the beginning of a lengthy process. Comprehensive planning, technology selection, and execution strategies are yet to be determined before the project can advance to the next stages.

As the project progresses, the government will need to conduct detailed surveys and assessments to ensure the feasibility of the proposed railway line. The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of thorough planning to address the unique geographical and logistical challenges posed by the region. The successful implementation of this bullet train project could significantly enhance connectivity and economic growth in Assam and the Northeast, providing a much-needed boost to infrastructure in the area.

In conclusion, while the approval to extend bullet train services to Guwahati is a pivotal development, it is clear that substantial work remains ahead. The government will focus on navigating the complexities associated with construction and ensuring that the project meets the necessary technical and safety standards as it moves forward.
