Winter Arrives Early in North India With Temperature Drops in Himachal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Winter is making its presence felt in northern India, with significant temperature drops observed from the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh to the plains of Delhi. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that several areas in Himachal experienced sub-zero temperatures, while Delhi recorded its lowest October minimum in three years, indicating the onset of the colder months ahead. As the temperatures decline, residents are seen adapting by donning heavy woollen clothing.

On October 27, 2023, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 15.3°C at Safdarjung, which is 1.9°C below the normal for this time of year. The last time the national capital experienced a lower minimum temperature in October was on the same date in 2020, when it fell to 15.2°C. This year’s readings reflect a notable shift towards colder weather as the region transitions into winter.

Himachal Pradesh Experiences Severe Cold

In Himachal Pradesh, the cold weather has been particularly harsh, especially in the higher elevations where temperatures have already dipped below 10°C. The IMD reported that Kukumseri recorded the lowest temperature in the state at -2.1°C on October 27. Other notable readings included Tabo at 0.2°C and Keylong at 0.3°C, highlighting the severity of the cold in these areas.

Additional locations in Himachal Pradesh also reported low temperatures. Kalpa recorded a minimum of 3.6°C, while Manali registered 5.9°C. Other areas such as Bajaura, Seobagh, Bhuntar, Solan, Kufri, and Sundernagar reported minimum temperatures ranging from 7.2°C to 9.8°C. Shimla, a popular tourist destination, recorded a minimum temperature of 10.2°C, indicating that even the more frequented areas are not exempt from the winter chill.

The temperature readings were taken at 8:30 am on October 27, and the IMD noted that there was little change in minimum temperatures across many stations in the preceding 24 hours, with most readings remaining normal or close to normal. The weather agency also indicated that dry weather conditions were expected in Himachal Pradesh on October 27 and 28, providing a brief respite from the cold.

Upcoming Weather Changes Due to Western Disturbance

Changes in weather patterns are anticipated as the IMD has reported a western disturbance affecting the region. A cyclonic circulation over north Haryana is expected to influence weather conditions, while another western disturbance in the form of a trough is anticipated to impact northwest India starting from the night of October 27.

The forecast suggests that isolated weather activity may occur in Himachal Pradesh from Saturday, October 31 to Monday, November 2. Residents should prepare for potential thunderstorms and lightning, particularly on Thursday, October 30. These weather changes could bring further fluctuations in temperatures, adding to the already noticeable winter chill in the region.

With several areas in northern India already experiencing temperatures below 10°C, the current weather conditions serve as an early indication of the approaching winter season. As the region braces for colder days ahead, residents and authorities are advised to stay updated on the evolving weather patterns.
