The Odyssey Box Office Day 1: Nolan Film Joins India’s Biggest Hollywood Openers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, has made a significant impact on its opening day at the Indian box office. The film attracted considerable attention prior to its release and successfully capitalised on this anticipation, delivering impressive results on its first day. Starring Matt Damon, the film received an A certification, yet it managed to exceed pre-release expectations.

As per preliminary estimates from trade platform Sacnilk, The Odyssey grossed Rs 20.76 crore on its opening day in India, with a net collection of Rs 17.40 crore. The film was showcased across 8,413 shows nationwide, achieving an average occupancy of 48.7 per cent. This strong turnout was largely driven by interest in premium viewing options, particularly IMAX screenings.

The film’s release in India encompassed multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. However, it was the original English version that generated the bulk of the day one revenues.

Language Breakdown and Audience Turnout

Detailed estimates reveal that the English version led the box office with an approximate net collection of Rs 13.75 crore. In contrast, the Hindi-dubbed version earned about Rs 1.90 crore, while the Telugu version brought in around Rs 1.10 crore, and the Tamil version accounted for an estimated Rs 65 lakh.

The premium formats, particularly IMAX screenings, emerged as a key factor in driving audience numbers. The English IMAX 2D shows reportedly achieved an impressive occupancy of 73.86 per cent, reflecting the public’s preference for the grandeur of the film’s visuals.

Advance Bookings and Overall Reception

A notable aspect of the film’s success is attributed to its robust advance bookings, with approximately 396,000 tickets sold before its release. This figure ranks The Odyssey among the top four Hollywood films for advance bookings in India, behind titles such as Deadpool & Wolverine, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and The Conjuring.

In comparison, other notable films like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning had advanced ticket sales of around 248,000. Such pre-sale figures underscore the considerable anticipation surrounding Nolan’s latest project.

With The Odyssey opening in cinemas globally on July 17, it features a renowned ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson. The film is based on Homer’s classic poem and chronicles Odysseus’s challenging ten-year journey back to his kingdom of Ithaca following the fall of Troy. This release marks Nolan’s first directorial effort since his acclaimed work, Oppenheimer, which was released in 2023.
