Northern India & Central India Brace for 44°C Heatwave, Health Alerts Issued

The CSR Journal Magazine

As temperatures are projected to soar, a significant pre-summer heatwave is anticipated to affect extensive regions of north and central India during the final week of April 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that temperatures may rise between 42°C and 44°C across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. This marks an early escalation of heatwave conditions, as the temperatures begin a steep upward trend.

The IMD’s six-day outlook, accompanied by an animation illustrating the past week’s temperatures, indicates a noticeable rise in heat levels throughout the northern plains. As time progresses, this heat is expected to gradually extend into central and eastern parts of India. Experts have identified prevailing clear skies and dry westerly winds as contributing factors that promote significant daytime warming.

In preparation for the incoming heat, the Department has been closely monitoring temperature changes, offering warnings to residents of affected states.

Temperature Projections for New Delhi

In the capital city, New Delhi, temperatures are already exceeding seasonal averages. On April 22, forecasts predict maximum temperatures reaching between 39°C and 41°C, which is approximately 3°C to 5°C above the usual range for this time of year. While strong surface winds, estimated at 15-25 kmph, may provide temporary relief in some areas, they are unlikely to substantially alleviate the prevailing heat stress.

By April 23, projections indicate that the mercury could rise even further, with max temperatures expected to hit 40°C to 42°C. Minimum temperatures at night are also anticipated to remain elevated, ranging from 23°C to 25°C. Warmer nights serve as a significant indicator of intensifying heatwave conditions, as they hinder the body’s ability to recuperate from the daytime heat.

The situation is set to deteriorate further on April 24 and 25, with isolated areas in Delhi likely facing heatwave conditions. Maximum daytime temperatures may spike between 42°C and 44°C, contributing to persistently elevated readings across most localities. Winds are expected to remain mild to moderate, blowing primarily from the west and northwest, which will provide little relief in cooling temperatures.

Impacts and Advice from Meteorologists

Meteorologists have attributed the rising temperatures to various climatic factors, including clear skies, dry air, and reduced wind speeds in the late afternoon, all of which contribute to heat accumulation. Similar weather patterns are expected in neighbouring states, particularly in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, where many regions may also exceed 43°C.

The IMD has warned that early-season heatwaves can significantly impact public health, agricultural output, and electricity demand. Health authorities are advising the public to avoid extended sun exposure, stay adequately hydrated, and take necessary precautions during peak afternoon heat.

With the arrival of May, typically the hottest month in India, there are escalating concerns regarding a prolonged and severe summer across much of the country. The situation necessitates close monitoring and public preparedness to mitigate the impact of these extreme temperatures.
