New Class 9 English NCERT Textbook ‘Kaveri’ Emphasizes Indian Literary Voices

The CSR Journal Magazine

The newly released English textbook for Class 9, titled ‘Kaveri’, has been developed in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

This book will replace the earlier educational resources, ‘Beehive’ and ‘Moments’, which were in use since the 2006–07 academic year and are set to continue until the 2025–26 academic session. The introduction of ‘Kaveri’ marks a significant shift towards greater inclusion of works by Indian authors alongside the retention of selected international texts.

Streamlined Curriculum with Fewer Texts

A noteworthy alteration in the curriculum is the consolidation of two previous English textbooks into a single comprehensive volume, ‘Kaveri.’ This revised textbook features a total of 16 texts, a reduction from the 29 previously provided in the earlier educational resources. Education officials explained that this streamlining initiative aims to create a more focused and manageable learning experience for students, while also ensuring a diversity of reading materials is maintained.

Increased Representation of Indian Authors

The ‘Kaveri’ textbook comprises 16 literary works, of which eight are authored by Indian writers. Notable figures such as Subramania Bharati, Sudha Murty, Temsula Ao, Mitra Phukan, and Rabindranath Tagore are prominently featured. The opening narrative is derived from Sudha Murty’s 2004 collection titled “How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories.”

Additionally, the book aims to incorporate ‘Indian Knowledge Systems’ (IKS), showcasing an effort to integrate Indian cultural and intellectual traditions within the school curriculum.

International Authors Also Included

Despite the enhanced focus on Indian literary voices, ‘Kaveri’ retains contributions from various international authors. Among the six texts by foreign writers are works from American poet David Roth, English poet Charles Swain, American children’s author Bryanna T. Perkins, poet Robert Langley, writer Maya Anthony, and Singapore-based author Irene Chua.

The book also features an anonymous poem titled “Gifts of Grace: Honouring Our Vocations.” Moreover, a notable piece included is an interview-based article titled “The World of Limitless Possibilities,” which provides insights through an interview with Paralympic athlete Deepa Malik.

Aims of the Revised Textbook

Educational officials state that the newly crafted textbook aspires to provide students with a balanced array of literature, personal narratives, and motivational stories. This alignment with the objectives of the recently updated educational framework indicates a commitment to enhancing the quality and relevance of educational materials in Indian schools.
