Navi Mumbai Teacher Booked for Allegedly Beating Student Over Tables

The CSR Journal Magazine

A private tuition teacher, Rupali Thavi, has been accused of physically assaulting a Class 8 student for not memorizing multiplication tables. The incident occurred in Gothivali village, Navi Mumbai, where it is reported that Thavi struck the girl approximately 20 times on her hand using a wooden roti-flipping tong. The student’s hand showed signs of swelling and red marks, accompanied by severe pain following the incident.

Student’s Background and Family Response

The impacted student has been attending the tutoring sessions for five years. Her family sought medical attention and conducted an X-ray, which indicated no fractures. The girl’s mother, identified as Poonam Wadke, subsequently filed a complaint with the local police. In her statement, she noted that the tuition sessions were conducted at the teacher’s residence and that the assault occurred after Thavi instructed the class to memorize multiplication tables.

Teacher’s Defense and Family’s Confrontation

According to Wadke, when the family confronted Thavi regarding the incident, the teacher allegedly responded by asserting that the daughter does not study and claimed that other students were also subjected to punishment. Thavi reportedly suggested that the family should consider enrolling their child in a different tuition class if they were dissatisfied with her methods.

Police Investigation and Child Protection Involvement

The police have formally registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident. Authorities are currently conducting a medical examination of the student and are in the process of interviewing other students to gather additional information on the events that transpired during the tuition sessions.

Implications from the Thane District Child Protection Department

In light of the serious nature of the allegations, the Thane District Child Protection Department has intervened in the case. The department has indicated that it may take action against the teacher under relevant child protection laws, depending on the outcomes of the ongoing investigation.
