Having joined him in 2016, Arya is expected to retire in three months after a decade of dedicated service. Gaikwad described the routine they shared, which included morning practices, attending calls, and daily nourishment. The anxiety about Arya’s future had been a heavy weight on his mind when contemplating external adoption.

Gaikwad conveyed his emotional response to the new policy, stating, “It was very painful when we had to retire the dogs, but this decision has brought us great joy. We will now be able to care for them throughout their lives, ensuring the dogs face no difficulties.” His sentiment captures the overall feelings of many handlers who want the best for their canine partners.

Maharashtra Government’s Commitment to Canine Care

The Maharashtra government recently announced a significant initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for dogs serving in the police force. He noted, “Working with dogs feels good; their caretaking and working with them feels nice.” This sentiment underlines the strong bond that exists between handlers and the dogs they work with.

Thakur expressed his relief at the prospect of being able to continue caring for his working partner after retirement. The shift to lifetime care alleviates concerns about how these animals will be treated outside of the police department. “It feels very good that if he stays with us, we will take good care of him after retirement,” he remarked.
