Mumbai Indians Break 14-Year Jinx with Six-Wicket Win Over KKR in IPL 2026 Opener

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai Indians defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in their IPL 2026 opener at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, successfully chasing 221 to finish on 224/4 in 19.1 overs. Kolkata Knight Riders had earlier posted 220/4 in their 20 overs. The win marked Mumbai Indians’ first opening-match victory since 2012, ending a 14-year jinx.

Rickelton, Rohit Power Record Chase

Mumbai Indians’ chase was defined by a dominant opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, which put KKR under immediate pressure. The duo added 122 runs in just 10 overs without loss, effectively setting the platform for the chase.

Rickelton led the scoring with a blistering 81 off 43 balls, combining clean hitting with strong strike rotation. Rohit complemented him with a fluent 78 off 38 deliveries, reaching his half-century in just 23 balls. The pair took on both pace and spin, targeting Varun Chakaravarthy and Vaibhav Arora during the powerplay.

After Rohit’s dismissal at 148/1, Suryakumar Yadav added a quick 16 before falling, while Tilak Varma chipped in with 20. Despite a late run-out of Rickelton and a few wickets in the middle overs, Mumbai never lost control of the chase. Naman Dhir eventually sealed the win with a boundary, taking MI home with five balls to spare.

KKR’s Strong Total Built on Rahane, Raghuvanshi

Kolkata Knight Riders posted a competitive 220/4 after being put in to bat. Captain Ajinkya Rahane anchored the innings with a composed 67 off 40 balls, providing stability after an aggressive start.

Finn Allen set the tone early with a quick 37 off 17 balls, attacking in the powerplay alongside Rahane. The pair ensured KKR reached 78/1 at the end of six overs. Cameron Green added 18 before falling, but the momentum was maintained through the middle phase.

Debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi played a standout innings, scoring 51 off just 29 balls. His knock, along with contributions from Rinku Singh, helped KKR accelerate in the final overs. Despite a brief slowdown caused by tight spells from Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, KKR crossed the 200 mark comfortably.

Shardul Thakur was the pick of the Mumbai bowlers, finishing with 3/39, including key wickets of Finn Allen, Cameron Green and Ajinkya Rahane.

MI Break Opening Jinx with Clinical Finish

Chasing 221, Mumbai Indians maintained control throughout, largely due to their explosive start. The absence of early wickets hurt KKR, whose bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs on a batting-friendly surface.

Even after losing wickets in the middle overs, Mumbai’s deep batting ensured there were no major setbacks. The required rate was consistently under control, and the team completed one of the highest successful chases at the venue.

Ryan Rickelton was named Player of the Match for his match-winning 81, which set the tone for the chase. The result gives Mumbai Indians early momentum in the tournament and ends their long-standing reputation as slow starters.

The next IPL fixture will see Chennai Super Kings take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Mumbai Indians will face Gujarat Titans in their next match, while Kolkata Knight Riders are scheduled to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad.
