Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday. This act was part of his visit to the Kyrgyz capital for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Leadership Summit. The memorial visit highlighted the significance of Gandhi’s ideals in contemporary society.

During this tribute, Modi reflected on the lasting influence Gandhi’s thoughts have had, stating that they will always resonate deeply within individuals. He took to social media to convey his sentiments regarding Gandhi’s profound impact, noting the enduring message of peace and non-violence that the Mahatma championed.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasised that Modi’s homage served as a reminder of Gandhi’s universal appeal and the relevance of his ideals in today’s world. This act illustrated the Prime Minister’s commitment to honouring India’s legacy while participating in important international dialogues.

Engagement with Friends of India Community

Following the tribute, Modi interacted with a group known as the “Friends of India,” which comprises prominent members of the Indian diaspora, environmental advocates, yoga practitioners, academics, and alumni of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme. He expressed his pleasure at witnessing ongoing engagement with these individuals who have deep connections to India.

Alumni from the ITEC programme represent professionals from more than 160 partner countries who have undergone fully-funded training in technical and economic fields in India. Modi highlighted the achievements of one yoga practitioner who had travelled to Ahmedabad for the World Yogasana Championship and secured a medal, showcasing the accomplishments of those connected to India.

During this engaging interaction, Jaiswal noted that Modi shared thoughts on the historical ties of friendship between India and the Kyrgyz Republic. The discussions also focused on exploring potential avenues to strengthen people-to-people connections and expand cooperation in various sectors.

Modi’s Broader Diplomatic Engagements in Bishkek

Modi’s visit to Bishkek followed a two-day trip to Uzbekistan, where he and Uzbekistan agreed to enhance their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. They set an ambitious target for annual trade at USD 5 billion by the year 2030. This development is part of India’s broader efforts to solidify regional engagements.

In a statement prior to his departure from Uzbekistan, Modi outlined his vision for the region, focusing on aspects related to security, connectivity, and opportunities. He expressed his aspirations to collaborate with fellow SCO nations to establish a region that is resilient against terrorism, separatism, and extremism.

The SCO, founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, is marking its 25th anniversary. India and Pakistan became full members in 2017, with Iran joining in 2023 and Belarus expected to follow in 2024. Modi’s tribute to Gandhi, along with his discussions with the Friends of India, encapsulated his commitment to not only advancing India’s foreign policy but also strengthening its cultural and diplomatic ties in the region.
