India and Bulgaria Strengthen Bilateral Relations, Focus on India-EU FTA

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Bulgaria have called for the swift execution of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is anticipated to enhance economic and commercial interactions between the nations. This call was made during the recent Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), co-chaired by Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, and Christo Polendakov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the importance of the FTA in its statement.

During the FOC, both countries engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding their bilateral relations, covering diverse sectors such as defence, artificial intelligence, trade, and space. MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal relayed the outcomes of the meeting on the social media platform X, stating that various aspects of cooperation were examined in depth.

The urgency of implementing the India-EU FTA was a notable emphasis of the consultations. Both parties recognised that the agreement would play a significant role in fostering closer economic ties, which would benefit both countries in multiple sectors.

Previous High-Level Meetings

Earlier, in June, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conducted discussions with notable Bulgarian leaders, including Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova. These discussions concentrated on broadening bilateral collaboration across numerous sectors and enhancing India’s engagement with Bulgaria and the EU.

After his meeting with Prime Minister Radev, Jaishankar took to X to express his pleasure at the engagement, conveying the greetings of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bulgaria’s government and people. He remarked on the increasing opportunities for bilateral relations, highlighting the significance of the India-EU Strategic Partnership.

Jaishankar further elaborated on the potential for closer cooperation by addressing areas such as trade and investment, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and more. He also discussed the growing necessity for India and Bulgaria to collaborate in an evolving global landscape.

Commitment to Cultural and Economic Ties

Jaishankar’s engagement in Bulgaria included meetings with Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova, where both parties considered the full breadth of India-Bulgaria relations. They aimed to explore new pathways for cooperation, particularly in relation to the India-EU FTA negotiations and the Strategic and Defence Partnership.

In his post-meeting comments, Jaishankar reiterated the need to expand economic engagement and strengthen joint efforts in science and technology, artificial intelligence, and cultural exchanges. He stressed the importance of increasing political interactions and fostering people-to-people contact to solidify the relationship further.

Historical ties between India and Bulgaria are characterised by warmth and mutual respect. Both nations take pride in their rich cultural heritage, with connections predating their formal diplomatic relations established in 1954. Historical evidence suggests contact between the two countries as far back as the 8th Century AD, underpinning a longstanding friendship that both nations continue to nurture today.
