“As long as I am the Chief Minister, Miyas will continue to face hardship in Assam”: Himanta Biswa Sarma

The CSR Journal Magazine

In election-bound Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a scathing verbal attack against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who he refers to as Miyas. CM Sarma clearly stated that as long as he remains Chief Minister, the Miya community will face hardship in Assam. At the same time, Himanta also sent a message to the Miyas to leave Assam. In his words, “They will have to endure this suffering until they, the Miyas, leave Assam.”

On Sunday, Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the the Miyas are actually residents of Bangladesh who came to Assam from Khulna. CM Sarma said, “I know the Miyas will not vote for us. They should go to Bangladesh and vote there. As long as I am the Chief Minister of Assam, they will face hardship. They will not be able to live in peace here. If we create problems for them, only then will they leave Assam.” Not only that, the CM had previously said, “The Miyas are illegal Bangladeshis, therefore they have no right to work in Assam.” The chief minister recently advised, if the rickshaw driver is a Miya, then pay Rs 4 instead of Rs 5 fare. Because, according to the country’s laws, they cannot work here.

Assam Assembly polls are scheduled for March-April

Assam Assembly polls are scheduled for March-April. Keeping the elections in mind, CM Sarma has adopted an anti-Bangladeshi policy. Earlier, giving a strong message against the Miyas, he said, “We have taken steps to ensure that the Miyas cannot vote. However, this was the initial stage of work. When the SIR (Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls) is implemented in Assam, 4-5 lakh Miya voters will be removed from the voter list.”

He added, “No matter how much the Congress harasses me, my job is to create problems for the Miyas. If they don’t face problems, they will keep settling in Duliajan and Tinsukia. A few days ago, I received a list of land transfers in Tinsukia where a property owned by a Hindu is being sold, and Miya Muslims are buying it. If we don’t pay attention to this now, then when?”

Amit Shah praises Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership

Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday (January 31) strongly endorsed the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma at two back-to-back public rallies in poll-bound Assam, signalling the BJP’s intent to project continuity ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Addressing a massive rally in Dibrugarh, Shah attacked the Opposition Congress over the issue of infiltration and asserted that the BJP would act firmly against illegal entrants under Sarma’s leadership.

“I promise from the soil of Assam’s second capital (Dibrugarh), Himanta ji ke netritya main yaha pe teesri baar BJP sarkar bana do, ek ek ghuspetiyo ko chun chun kar Assam ke bahar hum nikal denge. These infiltrators cannot help Assam or the country in any way,” Shah said.

The BJP has been heading a coalition government in Assam since 2016. Sarma took over as chief minister in May 2021, replacing Sarbananda Sonowal.
