Will Make Marathi a Language of Employment and Global Recognition: Deputy CM Eknath Shinde

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to transforming the Marathi language into not just a cultural emblem but also an economic asset and a tool for employment.

Speaking at the ‘Jave Vinodka Gaon’ event in the Legislative Assembly, held to mark Marathi Language Gaurav Day, Shinde laid out several initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting Marathi, including the creation of an encyclopedia, hosting literary conferences, and increasing its usage in government functions.

Event Attendance and Cultural Significance

The event saw participation from notable dignitaries including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, and Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde, among others. The gathering highlighted the cultural richness of the Marathi language. Shinde remarked that Marathi serves as a vital thread in Maharashtra’s identity, referencing poet Kusumagraj and expressing gratitude towards various cultural figures, including poets, writers, and scholars.

Efforts Towards Recognizing Marathi as a Classical Language

Shinde expressed appreciation for the central government’s consistent support in recognizing Marathi as a classical language. He stated that a renewed focus on education and the use of Marathi as a medium for learning is essential. The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the government’s ambition to promote Marathi in diverse sectors, particularly as a language used in business, and reiterated efforts to translate significant Marathi literary works into other languages.

Integration of Marathi in Modern Context

Shinde noted that the Marathi language has successfully adapted to contemporary trends, especially with its presence across social media platforms. He recognized the variety of dialects within the language, including Khandeshi, Malvani, Konkani, and Varhadi, calling this diversity a strength. He urged people to utilize available resources to elevate the prominence of Marathi globally.

Future Initiatives for Marathi Language Promotion

The Deputy Chief Minister outlined ongoing projects, including updating the encyclopedia and creating versions targeted at children and various themes, such as sports. He mentioned the World Marathi Literature Conference as a vital platform to promote Marathi on an international stage, also indicating a commitment to connect Marathi speakers around the world.

Highlighting the Art of Marathi Humour

The event also aimed to celebrate the tradition of Marathi humor, drawing inspiration from legends like Acharya Atre and P. L. Deshpande. Shinde remarked on the resilience of the Marathi people, noting that humor is a distinctive trait even in challenging times.

Personal Commitment to Marathi Heritage

In an emotional declaration, Shinde asserted, “Marathi in my blood, Marathi in my breath,” expressing his intention to vigorously promote the Marathi heritage. He called for collaborative efforts to strengthen the status of Marathi worldwide and extended greetings for a joyful Marathi Language Gaurav Day to all attendees.
