Malaysia’s PM Anwar Ibrahim Congratulates Tamil Nadu’s New CM Vijay

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, expressed his congratulations to C Joseph Vijay for being elected as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. This acknowledgment comes after Vijay’s newly established party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), registered significant electoral victories in the state assembly elections. In a message shared on X, Ibrahim underscored the historical and cultural bonds between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu.

In his post, the Malaysian leader referenced a song named “Oru Viral Puratchi,” from Vijay’s film Sarkar, which translates to “one-finger revolution.” This term symbolises a peaceful and democratic movement aimed at combating corruption through the act of voting, and Ibrahim noted that such a movement is on the brink of making history.

“I warmly congratulate my friend Vijay on being elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” he added. “For many years, his adoring fans observed him defeat corrupt politicians and assorted villains within a short time frame on screen. The people of Tamil Nadu have now entrusted Vijay with a role of far greater significance than any portrayed in his films,” he stated.

The Cultural Ties Between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu

Ibrahim highlighted the longstanding relationship between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu, expressing his hope for enhanced collaboration in the future. He stated, “Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties that have persisted across generations. I look forward to working closely with Chief Minister Vijay in the years ahead.” This sentiment reflects the close connections that exist between the two regions, encapsulating mutual cultural appreciation and cooperation.

Malaysia is home to nearly 185,000 Non-Resident Indians, consisting of skilled and unskilled workers, with an estimated Indian expatriate community of around 25,000. Approximately 2.75 million Persons of Indian Origin reside in Malaysia, making up nearly 6.8 per cent of the nation’s total population. This demographic constitutes the third-largest Indian diaspora worldwide.

Among this community, roughly 90 per cent speak Tamil, while other languages such as Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Marathi are also represented. These linguistic connections further emphasise the cultural interplay between India and Malaysia.

Vijay’s Historic Electoral Success

On May 7, 2023, Vijay was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a significant moment in the state’s political history following his successful debut in electoral politics. The oath was administered by Tamil Nadu’s Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, in a ceremony attended by notable figures including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Vijay’s parents, actress Trisha Krishna, and other prominent guests.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu elections have been recorded as a pivotal moment, with the state delivering an unprecedented mandate for Vijay. The TVK achieved astonishing results, securing 108 of the 234 seats in its initial political undertaking. This election represented a historic first, witnessing both traditional ‘Dravidian’ parties being removed from power.

Despite this remarkable victory, the TVK was unable to secure an outright majority and subsequently garnered support from other parties, including Congress, CPI-M, CPI, VCK, and IUML, which were previously allies of the Secular Progressive Alliance led by DMK. Although the TVK was launched in 2024, Vijay had engaged in social work and advocacy, addressing issues such as corruption and drug abuse through his films, thereby connecting with the public prior to his political career.
