Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Jolts Leh–Ladakh, Tremors Felt Across Kashmir and Central Asia

The CSR Journal Magazine

A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Leh–Ladakh region on Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 11:51 am and originated at a depth of 171 kilometres, placing it in the category of deep-focus earthquakes. The epicentre was located at coordinates 36.71° North and 74.32° East.

Tremors Felt Beyond Indian Borders

Although the epicentre was in Ladakh, the impact of the earthquake was felt across a wide region. Tremors were reported from parts of the Kashmir Valley, and intensity maps released by the NCS indicated that seismic waves were also felt in parts of Tajikistan in Central Asia. Residents in several areas reported brief shaking, prompting concern but no immediate panic.

No Casualties or Damage Reported

Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property following the earthquake. Local administrations and disaster response teams remain on alert and are monitoring the situation closely. Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in view of the possibility of aftershocks.

Part of the Himalayan Seismic Belt

The Leh–Ladakh region lies within the seismically active Himalayan belt, which frequently experiences earthquakes due to tectonic plate movements. While deep earthquakes like this one usually cause less surface damage compared to shallow quakes, they can still be felt over large distances.

The earthquake comes amid heightened seismic activity in the broader region. A day earlier, Afghanistan was struck by a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. In recent days, the country has recorded multiple tremors, including a magnitude 4.2 quake on January 15 and a 3.8 quake on January 14, both at depths exceeding 90 kilometres.

Authorities Remain Vigilant

Experts note that shallow earthquakes tend to be more destructive, as seismic waves travel shorter distances to the surface. While Friday’s quake was relatively deep, officials continue to monitor developments and have urged people in affected areas to stay alert and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
