LPU Establishes Committee to Investigate Campus Violence Incidents

The CSR Journal Magazine

Lovely Professional University (LPU) has initiated a three-member disciplinary committee to investigate the involvement of students in alleged incidents of arson, vandalism, and violence linked to recent unrest on its Phagwara campus. Approximately 30 to 40 students are reportedly being scrutinised as university officials analyse video footage and other evidence to identify those implicated in the disturbances.

This action follows a series of protests that escalated into violence, sparked by allegations of sexual assault. Students congregated near the girls’ hostel before disorder erupted, resulting in significant damage to university property and vehicles being set ablaze.

Property Damage and Violence Reported

During the clashes, students are alleged to have vandalised various university facilities, leading to the destruction of property, as well as the damage to local shops. In addition to reports of stone-pelting directed at police, a police vehicle was also reportedly set on fire amid the chaos. One student, identified as MD Farhat Dev, has faced accusations from peers for allegedly destroying trophies during the unrest.

The university is currently reviewing footage and other pertinent evidence as part of their investigation. The steps being taken to identify individual students are part of the broader probe, and any disciplinary actions will hinge on the findings of the committee.

Classes have been suspended for a period of ten days starting from September 28, and mid-term examinations have been postponed as a direct consequence of the unrest. Reports also indicate that numerous students opted to leave the campus following a significant police presence on site.

Investigation into Allegations of Sexual Assault

In a separate development, authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) following a complaint lodged by a female student, alongside the formation of a Special Investigation Team dedicated to thoroughly investigating the alleged sexual assault. Investigators will scrutinise CCTV evidence, forensic findings, and call logs as part of their inquiries.

Meanwhile, LPU has issued statements denying the allegations of sexual assault, labelling the claims circulating amongst students and on social media as unfounded and fabricated. The current focus of the university’s disciplinary inquiry remains on the individuals allegedly involved in the violence and damage incurred during the recent unrest.

As the investigation proceeds, the university is emphasising its commitment to maintaining a safe campus environment while holding those responsible for the recent violations of decorum accountable. The outcomes of the disciplinary committee’s proceedings are expected to inform future measures to prevent such incidents within the institution.
