LPG Tanker Shivalik Arrives at Mundra Port After Navigating Hormuz Strait

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker Shivalik is set to dock at Mundra port in Gujarat today after successfully crossing the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This vessel, along with another Indian-flagged ship named Nanda Devi, was granted permission to transit through the Strait by Iranian authorities. Both vessels are essential for maintaining India’s energy supply and are navigating back to Indian waters following their journey through the Gulf region.

Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Shipping Ministry, confirmed that the Shivalik and Nanda Devi are expected to arrive in India on March 16 and March 17, respectively. He noted that approximately 92,700 metric tons of LPG is being transported onboard these tankers. As of now, 24 Indian-flagged vessels are operating within the Persian Gulf, with two already en route to their destinations in India. The remaining vessels and their seafarers continue to operate safely, with no incidents reported in the last 24 hours.

Background on Maritime Navigation and Regional Security

The passage of these vessels has been closely monitored amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of direct dialogue with Iran to facilitate maritime traffic in the region. During a recent interview, he stated that India is proactively engaging with Tehran to enhance its energy security, which is vital for the nation given that the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial corridor for the world’s oil trade.

Jaishankar highlighted the successful transit of the Shivalik and Nanda Devi as a practical achievement of ongoing diplomatic efforts. He reiterated that while there have been discussions facilitating the passage of Indian vessels, a formal blanket arrangement for all Indian-flagged ships has not yet been established. Instead, each vessel’s transit is being managed on an individual basis, reflecting a careful approach to ensure safety and operational efficacy.

Iran’s Assurance for Indian Shipping

In a related development, Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, a representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, assured that Indian vessels would continue to be allowed passage through the Strait of Hormuz. In response to questions regarding the safety of maritime navigation for Indian ships, he confirmed that efforts were underway to facilitate the crossing of additional vessels. Ilahi noted that Iran’s embassy is actively working to provide opportunities for Indian maritime activities amidst regional conflicts.

This assurance from Iran is important for India’s maritime trade, given the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a passage for a substantial volume of global oil shipments. The cooperation between the two nations in this context illustrates an effort to maintain operational channels for energy supplies crucial to India’s economy.

As the Shivalik nears its destination at Mundra port, the focus remains on sustaining safe navigation for Indian vessels in the region, ensuring that trade continues without disruption amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
