“Leadership Coup”: Jairam Ramesh on Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Nomination

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh has expressed strong disapproval following Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s announcement to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. Ramesh described the situation as a “leadership coup,” asserting that it undermines the people’s mandate in Bihar.

He shared his remarks on X, emphasizing that this development was foreseen by the Indian National Congress during the recent elections in the state. He stated, “A leadership coup and regime change orchestrated by G2 has taken place, which constitutes a significant betrayal of the people’s mandate.”

Nitish Kumar’s Bid for Rajya Sabha

Nitish Kumar, who is 75 years old, has confirmed his intention to seek a seat in the Rajya Sabha during the current electoral cycle. In a post on X, Kumar expressed his commitment to work collaboratively with others for the continued development of Bihar. He assured his future partners of his support and emphasized the new Cabinet will receive his guidance. Kumar stated, “I want to assure you with complete honesty that my relationship with you will continue in the future as well.” This move comes after Kumar’s recent election victory, marking his fifth term as Chief Minister.

Kumar’s Political Journey

Nitish Kumar is noted for being Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister, having entered politics in 1985 as a member of the Janata Dal. His political career took shape as he co-founded the Samata Party in 1994 with George Fernandes. Kumar’s ascent continued when he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and subsequently served as a Union Minister in the Vajpayee government. His leadership was pivotal when the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) claimed a majority in the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2005. The NDA coalition maintained this momentum, winning subsequent elections in 2010.

Political Alliances and Shifts

Kumar’s political journey has been marked by shifting alliances. In June 2013, he broke away from the BJP to form a new coalition with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress. After temporarily stepping down in 2014, he returned as Chief Minister in 2015 and led the Mahagathbandhan to victory. However, he returned to the NDA in 2017, realigning with the BJP for the 2020 elections. In August 2022, Kumar left the NDA again, teaming up with the Mahagathbandhan, but rejoined NDA in January 2024, once again taking the office of Chief Minister. Following a remarkable win in the 2025 elections, Kumar now prepares to expand his political influence in the Rajya Sabha.
