Swatantra Bhardwaj has been remanded for one additional day as a fresh First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against him. Background of Bhardwaj’s Arrest

Swatantra Bhardwaj’s current legal troubles began with a separate incident that took place on June 23 during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The event was notable for gathering young activists advocating for issues such as examination irregularities and recruitment problems. It is alleged that Bhardwaj assaulted the father of a 14-year-old Dalit protester during this demonstration. Reports suggest that he physically harmed the individual, with claims that he ‘cracked a skull.’ This incident heightened the scrutiny on Bhardwaj’s actions and intentions.

Following his comments in a video where he discussed the incident, there was considerable uproar, particularly from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which organised the protests. His remarks appeared to imply that he acted in self-defence, which enraged many protesters and led to demands from opposition leaders for immediate police action. The pressure mounted, prompting a search for Bhardwaj that concluded with his detention in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.

Upon his arrest, Bhardwaj was presented before the Duty Magistrate at the Patiala House Court complex, where he participated via video conferencing. After the proceedings, he was remanded to one day’s police custody as investigations into both the assault and the new FIR continue.

The new FIR applies to allegations of online harassment and threats directed at the young protester associated with the earlier case.
