Lalu Prasad Yadav Accuses Nitish Kumar of Politically Motivating Security Withdrawal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Lalu Prasad Yadav, the national president of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), confirmed the withdrawal of his and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi’s security details on June 17, 2026. Yadav attributed this action to former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stating directly that “Nitish Kumar has got everything done.” He did not hold back in expressing his concerns regarding their safety following this official downgrade.

Previously, Yadav and Rabri Devi had enjoyed Z-plus security cover, which has now been significantly downgraded. The new arrangements offer them only limited house guards from the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) and a smaller number of personal bodyguards.

In response to this decision, the Yadav family opted to return the remaining government security personnel, seeking to rely on their party associates instead. RJD workers were seen stationed outside the family residence in Patna, saying they are ready to provide informal protection to Yadav and his family.

Party Response And Public Support

Supporters of the RJD expressed solidarity with the Yadav family amidst the security adjustments. One RJD worker mentioned that they are prepared to remain vigilant around the clock, emphasising that the people of Bihar stand firmly with the Yadav family during this period.

Tejashwi Yadav, another prominent figure in the party and son of Lalu Prasad Yadav, has similarly decided to return his own security. He announced that he does not require any protective measures, thereby mirroring the actions taken by his father and Rabri Devi. This move has sparked comments from party representatives, accusing the Bihar government of deliberately targeting their family.

Party leader Shakti Yadav highlighted the perceived malicious intent behind the security withdrawal, stating that these acts are aimed at humiliating some of the most established political figures in the state. He reiterated Tejashwi Yadav’s resolve to walk without security, signalling a strong stance against the government’s actions.

Government Actions Regarding Official Residence

The situation escalated after the Bihar government issued a notice to Rabri Devi, instructing her to vacate the official residence at 10 Circular Road, which has been associated with the Yadav family for many years. The property is now allocated to Bihar Minister Nand Kishore Ram. The government stated in its notice that Rabri Devi had been provided alternative housing at Hardinge Road due to her role as the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council.

Despite the government’s instructions, Rabri Devi has publicly resisted the move, affirming her intent to remain in the residence. She stated, “They can call the force to vacate the place, but I will not vacate the place,” reflecting a determination to hold on to the historically significant political site.

The Bihar government has set a deadline of 15 days for the Yadav family to vacate the official residence, escalating the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the RJD. The bungalow at 10 Circular Road is not just a residence but a significant political symbol for the Rashtriya Janata Dal, especially given its historical connections to Lalu Prasad Yadav’s term as Chief Minister.
