Kulgam Police have taken decisive action against drug trafficking by attaching immovable assets valued at approximately Rs 1.5 crore. These properties, which include six shops, five godowns, one tin shed, and one plinth, are situated in Village Manigam and belong to a known drug peddler, Mohd Ashraf Khanday. The police action falls under the jurisdiction of the Police Station Qazigund. The seizure was carried out following legal proceedings, citing Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Law enforcement established that the properties were acquired through illegal drug trafficking activities and are directly linked to Khanday’s operations in the narcotics trade.
Legal Proceedings Against Khanday
Khanday is also implicated in a registered case, FIR No. 196/2024, under relevant sections of the NDPS Act that pertain to the possession and trafficking of narcotics. The ongoing legal actions are part of the Kulgam Police’s broader initiative to dismantle the financial underpinnings of drug trafficking networks in the region. The authorities aim to convey a strong message that involvement in drug-related crimes will have serious financial and legal repercussions.
Zero-Tolerance Policy Against Drug Trafficking
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Kulgam, Anayat Ali Choudhary, has emphasized a stringent zero-tolerance policy towards drug activities in the area. In light of the recent actions, he cautioned that individuals found guilty of drug trafficking, extending financial support to offenders, or facilitating the drug trade will face severe consequences. This includes property attachment, comprehensive financial investigations, and prosecution under rigorously enforced laws.
Community Involvement Encouraged
In addressing the public, SSP Choudhary urged the community to engage constructively with police efforts in combating the drug crisis. He encouraged citizens to share information that could assist law enforcement in safeguarding the youth and society at large from the adverse effects of drug abuse and trafficking. According to Choudhary, dismantling the structures of illegal wealth and strengthening community cooperation are crucial in eradicating the narcotics threat.
