Kiren Rijiju Slams Rahul Gandhi for Undermining Democratic Institutions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has expressed strong disapproval of Rahul Gandhi regarding the no-confidence motion aimed at Speaker Om Birla. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Leader of the Opposition is undermining democratic institutions due to his inability to lead his party to electoral success. Rijiju suggested that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would be a more suitable leader for the Congress party and accused Rahul Gandhi of seeking foreign involvement to combat supposed threats to democracy in India.

NDA’s Perspective on the Opposition’s Actions

The NDA framed the no-confidence motion as another instance of Rahul Gandhi pressuring his Congress colleagues and other opposition members to align with his views. Rijiju claimed that around 50 opposition MPs had confided in him regarding their concerns about this motion. He asserted that Rahul’s actions are detrimental to the dignity of parliamentary proceedings.

Responses from Opposition Bloc Members

Despite the NDA’s criticisms, members of the opposition bloc, known as INDIA, defended their move against Speaker Birla. DMK’s TR Baalu referred to Birla as a “gentleman,” while TMC’s Mahua Moitra characterized the motion as a form of divine retribution due to her earlier expulsion. Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant suggested that Birla faced undue pressure when addressing the opposition.

Concerns Over Parliamentary Conduct

Kiren Rijiju accused Rahul Gandhi of diminishing the dignity of Parliament through his behavior, highlighting a past incident where Rahul attempted to embrace the Prime Minister. Other NDA members, including JDU’s Rajiv Ranjan and Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, criticized Rahul for his frequent absences during significant discussions and suggested he questions the sacrifices made by the armed forces. Shinde labeled him a “leader of vacation,” implying a lack of commitment.

Allegations of Disruption in Parliament

Rijiju’s assertion regarding discontent among opposition ranks comes amid evolving stances within the opposition party structures. He noted that the Congress party had avoided a no-confidence motion against former Speaker Somnath Chatterjee in a situation similar to the current one. Congress MPs interrupted the minister when he mentioned meetings between Rahul Gandhi and the Chinese ambassador during a tense period between India and China.

Financial Implications of Disruption

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh condemned the opposition’s repeated disruptions in Parliament, indicating that the cost of running Parliament amounts to Rs 1.9 crore for every hour and approximately Rs 9 crore daily. He asserted that the ongoing disruptions waste taxpayers’ money. Singh also referenced past experiences when Mamata Banerjee was the only MP from her party and was denied the opportunity to speak, emphasizing that the opposition’s current grievances are not new.
