Kerala Student Fatally Assaulted in Uzbekistan by Classmate

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 21-year-old medical student from Kerala, Savariya Basant, tragically lost her life after being assaulted by a classmate during a dispute in Uzbekistan. The incident, which has raised serious concerns, reportedly involved substantial violence, contradicting initial reports suggesting a less severe confrontation. Sadarul Anam, alleged to be the attacker, is also from Kerala and hails from the Malappuram district.

Following the return of Savariya’s remains to Kerala, her family has approached local police in Alappuzha, urging for a renewed investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. The family expressed a strong belief that the attack was not only fatal but also gruesomely inflicted, based on statements from an investigating officer in Uzbekistan.

Janeesh, Savariya’s uncle, shared that the officer reported multiple injuries covering her body, indicating that the assault was prolonged rather than instantaneous. “There were injury marks from head to toe on her body. It was not like he killed her in one minute with a laptop. The investigating officer told me it was done brutally,” he stated, highlighting the degree of violence involved in the incident.

Claims of Religious Conversion Pressure

Amidst the investigation, Janeesh revealed that other students at the medical institution allegedly informed investigators that Sadarul had been pressuring Savariya regarding her religious beliefs prior to the unfortunate incident. This claim, if validated, could suggest a motive rooted in religious conversion, further complicating the context of the assault.

According to Janeesh, the investigating officer noted that several students witnessed the pressure allegedly exerted on Savariya regarding conversion, which she reportedly resisted. “This was also communicated to the embassy officer who came there,” he mentioned, underlining a broader concern about the environment in which the students were living.

As she sought to pursue her medical education abroad, Savariya was staying in accommodation that housed both male and female students in the same building, albeit on separate floors. The family is now left questioning the safety and security measures in place at the institution.

Legal Proceedings and Family Demands

In light of the circumstances surrounding Savariya’s death, local police registered a murder case on July 10, 2026, responding to the family’s complaints. As part of the ongoing investigation, a second post-mortem examination was conducted at a local hospital to ascertain the exact cause of death and detail the extent of the injuries sustained.

The Basant family is advocating for the investigation to be conducted in Kerala and is demanding that Sadarul Anam be extradited from Uzbekistan to face appropriate legal proceedings in India. The family’s determination reflects their desire for justice and accountability in what they consider a tragic and brutal case.

They emphasised that Savariya was not only a dedicated student but also a beloved member of their family, deserving of justice in the wake of her untimely death. The pleas from her family have brought attention to the broader implications of safety and security for students studying abroad.
