K. Kavitha Criticises Congress Over Cancellation of Handloom Orders

The CSR Journal Magazine

K. Kavitha, the President of Telangana Jagruti, has strongly condemned the Congress government for what she describes as a ruthless action impacting handloom workers. Kavitha asserts that the government’s decision to unilaterally cancel student uniform orders has jeopardised the livelihoods of these artisans. She claims this action was designed to favour specific private individuals at the expense of the handloom sector.

In a press release, she warned that any form of injustice towards handloom workers would be met with opposition. Kavitha accused the administration, led by Revanth Reddy, of plunging these workers into a state of uncertainty and distress. Her statements reflect deep concerns regarding the cancellation of uniform orders under the Education Department, which operates under the Chief Minister’s authority.

Impact on Employment and Livelihoods

Kavitha highlighted that students’ uniform orders, valued at approximately Rs. 105 crore, are typically distributed among 393 handloom cooperative societies throughout Telangana. These orders are critical, as they provide employment to thousands of handloom workers. The abrupt cancellation has left many in jeopardy of losing their means of sustenance.

Additionally, she pointed to another alarming issue: orders worth roughly Rs. 200 crore, which were intended for blankets and other garments for various welfare departments, have not been placed with Telangana State Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society (TESCO). Kavitha alleged that, despite the deadline for these orders having lapsed, the government has purposefully refrained from issuing them, exacerbating the crisis faced by handloom workers.

She accused the Congress-led government of aiming to redirect these orders to selected private firms, undermining the handloom sector’s stability. In light of these accusations, Kavitha has called for an immediate reversal of the cancellations, stating that if changes are not made, Telangana Jagruti will mobilise a significant protest alongside affected labourers.

Honouring Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud

On a related note, the Telangana Jagruti Party recently paid tribute to the late Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud during a ceremony in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. Eedurugattla Sampath Goud, the District President of Telangana Jagruti in Kamareddy, praised Papanna’s legacy and recalled his historical resistance against upper-caste dominance. Papanna, he stated, exemplified a rebellious spirit from a young age, addressing social injustices faced by backward classes.

Sampath Goud detailed how Papanna rallied support from a cohort of approximately 12,000 followers, driven by Bahujan ideals, ultimately gaining control over Golconda Fort. He also expressed sorrow over the conspiracy that led to Papanna’s assassination during his ambitions to extend his rule towards Delhi. The historian lamented that details regarding Papanna had been obscured, only to garner attention in recent times through preservation efforts in a museum located in London.

In linking the ideals of Sardar Papanna Goud to the contemporary political landscape, Sampath Goud affirmed that Kavitha is committed to championing the causes of backward classes. He encouraged the public to unite under her leadership, inspired by Papanna’s principles, as they pursue a collective journey towards socio-economic empowerment.
