J&K Students Association Demands Evacuation of 1,200 Kashmiri Students From Conflict-Hit Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, Nasir Khuehami, has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the urgent evacuation of approximately 1,200 Kashmiri students currently located in areas affected by recent military strikes in Iran. This appeal follows escalated tensions resulting from attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian territories. Khuehami emphasized the distress faced by Indian students and citizens living in Iran, many of whom have established their lives, education, and work in the country.

In his communication, Khuehami highlighted the anxiety among families back home, particularly in the Kashmir Valley. He noted that out of around 3,000 Indian students in Iran, close to 2,000 hail from Kashmir. He expressed that the ongoing situation has prompted rising fears among families regarding the safety of their loved ones. He further stated, “We conveyed to PM Modi our request for an immediate evacuation operation for our stranded citizens. It is crucial for the Government of India to engage in diplomatic discussions to expedite this evacuation.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Addresses Safety Concerns

On the same day, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took measures to ensure the safety of Indian citizens residing in the Middle East amid the deteriorating situation between Iran and Israel. In a message shared on X, he confirmed that he consulted with the Resident Commissioner based in the capital. He stressed the importance of proactive strategies for safeguarding the well-being of Kannadigas living in various Middle Eastern nations, including Iran, Israel, the UAE, and Qatar.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the Karnataka government is treating the situation with the utmost seriousness. He directed officials to undertake necessary protective actions for citizens in response to the conflict and its implications for safety in the affected areas. His concerns reflect a broader awareness among Indian states of the growing geopolitical tensions resulting from military activities involving Iran and other nations.

Impact of Military Strikes on Airspace

This escalation in conflict, marked by military strikes from both the United States and Israel targeting Iranian installations, has led to significant disruptions in air travel. Temporary closures of airspace in parts of West Asia have prompted airlines globally to revise their routes, particularly those that typically navigate through or near the conflict zones.

As reports indicate a complex situation on the ground, both federal and state governments are under pressure to ensure the safety of their citizens. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association and other stakeholders are actively seeking solutions to facilitate the safe return of those affected. The cooperation of the Indian government with international diplomatic channels will be critical in addressing the immediate needs of Indian students in distress abroad.
