Janata Dal (United) Begins Organizational Elections Amid Leadership Crisis

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Janata Dal (United) commenced its organizational elections on Friday, navigating a period of internal strife following Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s decision to seek a seat in Parliament. Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the current Bihar president and an MLA representing Mahnar Assembly, emerged as the only candidate to submit nomination papers for the role of state unit president, indicating a likely unopposed re-election.

Internal Turmoil Following Kumar’s Announcement

The two-day electoral process follows Nitish Kumar’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha, marking a significant shift in Bihar’s political landscape and concluding his tenure as the state’s longest-serving Chief Minister. Kumar made his announcement via a post on X, leaving many party members surprised and triggering protests among the rank and file of the JD(U).

Protests and Allegations at JD(U) Office

At the party’s state headquarters in Patna, situated opposite the BJP’s state office, discontented party members organized protests on Friday. Certain factions within the party accused senior leaders of colluding with the BJP to remove Kumar from Bihar’s political scene. Protesters described those they viewed as “traitors” for allegedly collaborating with the BJP to isolate Kumar, suggesting that he had become an “eyesore” to influential liquor interests following the state’s prohibition policy.

Vandalism Reported Amid Frustration

In a display of frustration, incidents of vandalism occurred at the party office, with workers expressing their anger over what they regarded as a BJP-led conspiracy to displace Kumar and establish its own administration. In response to the ongoing unrest, Umesh Singh Kushwaha, after filing his nomination, sought to alleviate tensions, urging party members to accept the situation. He stated, “I filed my nomination on the instructions of Nitish Kumar,” and called for respect towards Kumar’s decision.

Political Realignment Speculation Surrounding Kumar’s Move

Nitish Kumar’s shift to the Rajya Sabha has heightened speculation about potential political realignments in Bihar. Observers see this development as a catalyst for the BJP to position its own chief minister in the state. Notably, Bihar remains the sole significant Hindi heartland state where the BJP has yet to hold the chief ministerial office independently.

BJP’s Growing Influence in Recent Elections

Speculation regarding this potential realignment gained traction following the BJP’s emergence as the single largest party with 89 seats in the recent assembly elections, surpassing the JD(U) for the second consecutive time. The evolving political landscape has also spotlighted Kumar’s family, particularly with his announcement of his son Nishant Kumar’s entry into politics, despite Kumar’s historical disapproval of dynastic practices. Party insiders suggest that Nishant may be positioned as the next JD(U) president, a strategic move intended to maintain party coherence as Kumar steps back from active involvement in state politics.
