Jaishankar Discusses Shipping Safety with Iranian Counterpart Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

New Delhi, March 12: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to address concerns over shipping safety and energy security. This dialogue comes in the wake of multiple attacks targeting commercial vessels in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital artery for global oil transportation. At a press briefing, External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that ensuring the security of maritime routes and stable energy supplies in the region was a focal point of the conversation. He noted that recent discussions between Jaishankar and Araghchi had taken place repeatedly over the past few days, emphasizing the urgency of safeguarding shipping interests.

Safety of Indian Nationals in Iran

During the briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that approximately 9,000 Indian nationals, which include students, seafarers, professionals, business owners, and pilgrims, are currently located in Iran. The ministry is coordinating efforts to assist these individuals amid growing safety concerns. Bagchi reported that a number of Indian nationals, predominantly students, have already returned to India, while others have been relocated to safer cities within Iran. The government is also facilitating the travel of Indian nationals wishing to reach Azerbaijan and Armenia for commercial flights back home. Assistance with visa arrangements and land border crossings is being provided to ensure their secure passage.

Evacuations and Assistance Efforts

Bagchi indicated that the Indian embassy in Iran is actively supporting nationals seeking safe routes out of the country. He reiterated the importance of adhering to the advisory issued by the Indian embassy for those seeking to leave Iran overland. The embassy has reported receiving requests from numerous individuals seeking assistance with safe crossings into neighboring countries.

Maritime Incident Reported Near Iraq

In a related development, the Indian Embassy in Iraq confirmed a maritime incident that resulted in the death of an Indian crew member aboard a US-owned crude oil tanker, Safesea Vishnu, flagged under the Marshall Islands. The tanker was reportedly attacked near Basra, Iraq, on March 11. The embassy communicated the situation regarding the remaining crew members, stating that the other 15 Indian nationals on board have been successfully evacuated to safety as the regional waters experience increased volatility.

Rising Regional Tensions

These maritime incidents are reflective of heightened regional violence following joint military operations by the US and Israel, which led to the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader. Additionally, reports from Turkey’s Anadolu Agency included footage of a foreign oil tanker engulfed in flames near the Umm Qasr port, suspected to be the result of an Iranian attack. The escalating conflict has prompted concern from India regarding the safety of its citizens and commercial interests in the region.

Official Response to Attacks on Shipping

In light of these developments, India has expressed serious concerns regarding the dangers posed to its nationals and commercial shipping routes. Following an earlier attack on a Thai vessel, Mayuree Naree, which was struck while en route to India, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a firm statement. The MEA condemned the deliberate targeting of commercial shipping amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, emphasizing that the intensifying attacks have already resulted in substantial loss of life, including Indian citizens.
