Hindu Temple Attacked With Bricks in Ohio, Groups Call for Immediate Action

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Hindu temple in Ohio was reportedly assaulted with bricks on Friday afternoon, resulting in considerable damage to the structure while worshippers were present. The incident occurred around 1:30 pm at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, located in the Greater Cleveland area. According to the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), bricks were allegedly hurled at the temple, leading to shattered windows. Priests and devotees were inside the temple during this distressing event.

Response from Hindu Organisations

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) took to X, sharing that surveillance footage of the incident is under review by law enforcement. In their post, HAF stated, “Hindu temple attacked in Ohio today. At 1:30 PM today, the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, Ohio was attacked by perpetrator(s) who threw bricks at the temple, causing significant damage.” They also assured that both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and civil rights authorities have been informed about the situation.

The organisation has characterised the incident as a potential hate crime and has appealed to authorities for a prompt investigation to identify those involved. HAF expressed concerns regarding rising hostility and hate directed towards the Hindu American community, urging law enforcement to prioritise the case. The organisation’s statement included a call for elected officials and government agencies to unequivocally condemn hate speech against Indian and Hindu American communities.

CoHNA echoed similar sentiments, stating that the attack occurred while priests and devotees were present. They did not provide specific details regarding any injuries sustained during the incident or the total number of windows that were damaged. CoHNA urged Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and local authorities to denounce the attack publicly, calling for immediate action from police.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Concerns

As of now, no suspects have been publicly named, and there has been no confirmation of any arrests related to this incident. Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the attack, as reported by ANI. This incident has raised concerns within Ohio’s Hindu communities, especially as they begin to celebrate Hindu Heritage Month in October, alongside upcoming Navratri festivities.

CoHNA has previously documented multiple vandalism incidents targeting Hindu temples across the United States. This includes the defacement of a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Shri Tulsi Mandir in Queens, New York, in August 2022, and the vandalism of the SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Newark, California, in December 2023. Additionally, BAPS temples in Melville, New York, and Sacramento, California, faced similar issues in September 2024. A further incident occurred in March 2025 when a BAPS temple in Chino Hills, California, was vandalised with messages against the Hindu community.

The growing trend of vandalism and attacks against Hindu places of worship highlights a pressing concern for community leaders and devotees. Many are left asking how law enforcement agencies will respond to ensure the safety and security of religious institutions and their congregations in the future. The FBI’s involvement and the attention from local authorities may enhance protective measures going forward, but the immediate impact of such incidents continues to evoke fear and concern within the community.
