INS Trishul Arrives In Spain Following Varuna Exercise With French Navy

The CSR Journal Magazine

INS Trishul, a guided-missile stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, has reached Valencia, Spain, following its engagement in the Varuna exercise with the French Navy. The Ministry of Defence confirmed this arrival on October 3, highlighting that the frigate docked at Valencia on September 30 as part of its broader deployment to regions including the Mediterranean and Atlantic.

During its time in Valencia, INS Trishul is scheduled to participate in a range of activities, including professional exchanges, cultural interactions, and sporting events with the Spanish Navy. These engagements are designed to promote the sharing of operational knowledge and improve mutual understanding between the two naval forces.

The visit not only reflects the Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthening relationships with allied navies but also aims at fortifying maritime cooperation. The ongoing deployment underscores a broader initiative to enhance defence ties and operational readiness across international waters.

Participation in Exercise Varuna

Prior to its arrival in Spain, INS Trishul took part in the 24th edition of Exercise Varuna, which is an annual maritime joint exercise between India and France. The frigate reached Toulon, France, on September 22 to engage in the exercise, which included both harbour and sea phases designed to improve the operational synergy between the two navies.

During the Toulon visit, the Commanding Officer of INS Trishul met Rear Admiral Mackara Ouk, Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Operations (CECMED), and interacted with top officials of the French Navy. Additionally, a wreath-laying ceremony was conducted at the Mazargues War Memorial in Marseille, commemorating the sacrifices of 205 Indian soldiers during the World Wars.

The harbour phase involved cross-deck visits and various professional exchanges, allowing personnel from both navies to gain insights into operational practices. The crew of INS Trishul also visited several French naval vessels, including the Charles de Gaulle, Forbin, and La Fayette, to better understand their operational frameworks.

Sea Phase Activities and Strategic Importance

During the sea phase of Exercise Varuna, INS Trishul operated alongside notable French naval units such as the FDA Forbin, FLF La Fayette, and SNA Suffren. The exercise featured comprehensive drills focusing on anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, supplemented by live-firing exercises and cross-deck helicopter landing serials.

The drills are aimed at improving operational coordination and interoperability between the two navies, which is crucial for maintaining maritime security. This deployment reaffirms the Indian Navy’s commitment to operational readiness and international maritime engagement.

The ongoing deployment in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and adjoining waters is positioned as a strategic move towards fostering a secure maritime environment. The Ministry of Defence indicated that activities in Valencia are expected to further solidify India’s maritime relationships with partner navies and enhance stability in international waters.
