There is shock and panic at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University after a student fell into a lake and drowned to death inside the campus this week. On Thursday night, third-year student Anamika Mondal fell into a lake near Gate No. 4 of Jadavpur University. She was found unconscious and declared dead after being rescued and taken to the hospital.
Questions have been raised about security on Jadavpur University campus after the unfortunate incident. A day after this, Jadavpur University authorities have issued a set of new guidelines to ensure safety and security of students.
Rules for vehicle entry into campus
Following this, new rules have been introduced for entering the campus. The guidelines state that two-wheeler or four-wheeler vehicles will be allowed to enter the campus only if they have a parking sticker issued by the Jadavpur University authorities. Not only that, they must be affixed in a place where the stickers are clearly visible.
Those who do not have the sticker issued by the university will have to submit their vehicle number, driver’s ID card, and passenger information to the security guards.
I-Card mandatory for entering campus after 7 pm
It has been made mandatory to show a university identity card to enter the campus after 7 pm. If a person does not have an identity card, they will have to show their valid documents and inform the reason for their visit in writing.
Strict stance on alcohol and marijuana
According to police sources, a cultural programme was held on Jadavpur University campus along with an alcohol party on the night of the student’s death. In this context, the authorities have again given a strict message. The directive clearly states, “If anyone is caught consuming drugs on campus, action will be taken as per the law.”
There have been allegations of alcohol and marijuana consumption inside the campus in the past, which have led to controversy. Hence, the university has taken a strict stand this time.
Morning walk banned for general public inside campus
Many common people come for walking inside the Jadavpur University campus every morning and evening. This time, a ban has been issued for them too. The directive states, “Instructions have been issued to stop morning and evening work for the general public on the university premises.” The administration claims that this will reduce the movement of strangers on the campus and security will be tighter.
Jadavpur University to address security lapses
Instructions to strengthen security were issued several times in the past at Jadavpur University. But it is alleged that they were not implemented in practice. Now the question arises, to what extent these new restrictions will be followed.
Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Amitabh Dutta stated, “There are some security lapses. The number of security guards is a bit less. We have informed the government about that.” Now the focus is on how effective the guidelines are for students and parents.
