On Wednesday morning, newly painted quotes by Karl Marx on the Arts faculty building were found coated over with fresh whitewash. The Marxian statements had been applied only a day earlier over an older coat of paint. Sources suggest the removal took place late Tuesday night. University officials stated that the administration was not behind this latest layer of whitewash.

The sequence of events unfolded rapidly over the past week:

August 28:Initial controversial political murals appeared on campus exterior surfaces.

August 29: University workers applied whitewash over the original artwork.

August 30: Activists responded by writing quotes from Karl Marx across the fresh paint.

September 2: The newly written quotes were once again covered with whitewash.

Addressing the situation, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that university structures remain institutional property and warned against using property alteration as a form of campus movement. He noted that widespread graffiti leaves the campus looking unkempt, running counter to modern academic aesthetic standards.

Context of the Jadavpur University Wall Dispute

The conflict roots back to violent confrontations between Left-wing student organizations and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Political friction intensified after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari publicly criticized specific writings on the Arts department walls notably those referencing the late Maoist commander Kishenji and calls regarding Kashmir.

Adhikari stated that slogans promoting insurgency or questioning territorial integrity would not be permitted on educational grounds. In the wake of his remarks, steps were taken to clean controversial markings from campus facilities, prompting student groups to launch counter-campaigns to reclaim wall space, giving rise to the current cycle of writing and erasure.
