Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has stated that he received a greater proportion of votes from regions linked to criminal activities, the underworld, and the red-light district in Nagpur compared to some of the city’s more affluent and educated localities. During an event in Nagpur, he emphasised that his connections within various segments of society should not be misconstrued as endorsement of any criminal behaviour.

Gadkari remarked on his experience in politics, claiming, “I experiment. I have done everything in politics, good as well as bad. I have relations with everyone.” He highlighted that while some educated areas yielded approximately 70 to 75 per cent of votes for him, the figures soared to around 92 per cent in the areas associated with criminal elements and the red-light district.

The minister attributed the significant support he received in these locales to his efforts in development and social welfare initiatives. He urged observers not to conclude that his relationships implied any form of criminal association, stressing his contributions in building infrastructure and conducting social work in those districts.

Gadkari’s statements come shortly after he indicated that he could no longer maintain the same level of political engagement and suggested that new generation leaders should begin taking responsibility. At another recent event in Nagpur, the 69-year-old stated, “These days, I can’t do as much work. I did it when I could. Now, my involvement has diminished.”

He expressed optimism about the new generation emerging in the political landscape, mentioning that the older generation is in a position to guide them. He noted his extensive experience over three decades in public life, along with the various challenges he has faced, and asserted that younger leaders should be afforded new opportunities.

Gadkari’s remarks coincided with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) announcement of significant organisational changes, leading to speculation regarding the implications of his comments. However, his office clarified that these statements should not be interpreted within a political context.

Previous Insights on Voter Relationships

In previous discussions, Gadkari has reflected on his rapport with voters, asserting that trust is crucial for winning elections rather than offering financial incentives. At a Maharashtra State Teachers Council event in July 2023, he pointed out that successful elections cannot solely rely on promotional banners or extravagant events.

Recalling a past electoral strategy that fell short, he shared an incident where he distributed one kilogram of Saoji mutton to attract voters but ultimately faced defeat. “People may win elections by using posters and providing election benefits. However, I do not subscribe to such practices,” he said.

He emphasised that while voters might accept various inducements, they eventually support candidates who resonate with their expectations. Gadkari’s reflections underline the notion that substantive relationships and trustworthiness remain pivotal in electoral success. He reiterated the intelligence of voters, maintaining that they are capable of making informed decisions based on their perceptions of candidates.
