Indian Railways Initiates Adipur-Bhuj Doubling Project

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Railways has formally approved the doubling of the 49-km Adipur-Bhuj rail section along the Western Railway network, at an estimated cost of Rs 493 crore. This initiative seeks to strengthen the railway infrastructure in Gujarat, catering to both the rising demand for passenger services and freight operations in the Kutch region. The move aligns with the broader capacity augmentation programme undertaken by Indian Railways, which aims to enhance the existing network through various projects across the country.

The Adipur-Bhuj section is a critical component of the Gandhidham-Naliya corridor, currently operating as a single line. Railway officials have observed that upcoming infrastructure developments in the region are likely to result in a considerable increase in rail traffic, necessitating this expansion initiative.

Several projects in the vicinity, including the Bhuj-Naliya Gauge Conversion initiative and the extension of the Naliya-Vayor line, are poised to contribute to better connectivity in western Gujarat. The approval for doubling this section ensures that the infrastructure can adequately support future operational demands for passenger and freight transport.

Additional Passenger Services Expected

A significant advantage of the Adipur-Bhuj doubling project is the anticipated improvement in passenger connectivity in the Kutch region. The new double track is expected to allow for the operation of two additional passenger trains in each direction daily, enhancing convenience and flexibility for travellers. This enhancement will serve both local commuters and those travelling longer distances.

The increase in passenger train services is aimed at improving overall travel experiences in the region, ensuring that residents and visitors alike have better access to rail-based transportation options. The expected surge in service frequency is designed to meet the growing travel demands from the community.

In addition, local authorities assert that elevated operational efficiency will likely result in improved punctuality of trains, thus bolstering public confidence in rail travel as a viable transport option.

Freight Capacity to Be Significantly Enhanced

The project is also set to play a pivotal role in enhancing freight transport capabilities in Kutch. Indian Railways anticipates that the doubled section will accommodate an additional 12 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of freight traffic. This increased capacity is expected to benefit various sectors, including industries, ports, and logistics operations throughout western Gujarat.

Catering to elevated freight traffic volumes is crucial for industries in the area, as improved rail logistics can help reduce congestion and improve turnaround times for goods. The overall boost in freight movement is expected to stimulate further economic activity within the region.

Moreover, as regional economic links are strengthened, local businesses stand to gain from enhanced access to markets, which is in line with the Indian Government’s goals of developing rail infrastructure that meets modern transportation demands.

Future-Proofing the Railway Network

Railway authorities project that by the fiscal year 2029-30, line capacity utilisation on the Adipur-Bhuj section could surge to 123 per cent. This forecast underscores the urgent need for timely infrastructure enhancements to keep pace with the anticipated traffic growth. The doubling project aims to alleviate congestion and operational challenges, improving train service reliability.

Enhanced railway capacity will better position Indian Railways to manage future traffic increases while creating additional revenue opportunities through heightened passenger and freight services. With a focus on future readiness, this initiative marks an essential advancement in strengthening the transportation network in Gujarat’s Kutch region.

The Rs 493 crore Adipur-Bhuj doubling project represents a significant investment in enhancing railway connectivity in the area. By supporting additional train operations and increasing freight capacity, it is poised to play a crucial role in promoting regional development and improving the efficiency of Indian Railways.
