Indian Railways has recently sanctioned a series of infrastructure and safety initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficacy and ensuring passenger safety. Among these initiatives is the installation of the automatic train protection system Kavach 4.0, which represents a significant leap in railway safety technology. The Railway Ministry announced that the total expenditure for these projects amounts to Rs 736 crore, covering various railway divisions across the country.

The approved works span several key locations, including the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway, the Solapur Division of Central Railway, and segments of South Coast Railway and Western Railway. Each of these locations will see advancements in infrastructure aimed at improving both efficiency and safety for passengers and freight operations alike.

Details of Kavach 4.0 Installation

The Railway Ministry has allocated Rs 252 crore for the implementation of Kavach Version 4.0 over 607.7 route kilometres within the Lucknow Division. This automated system is designed to avert potential accidents by intervening when trains approach red signals, thus applying brakes when necessary. It is intended to fortify the existing safety measures for train operations across the identified sections of the division.

Kavach 4.0 will enhance the monitoring of train movements, which officials believe will significantly reduce the risk of overshooting signals. The introduction of this system underscores the Ministry’s commitment to adopting advanced technology to bolster rail safety standards throughout the network.

In conjunction with the deployment of Kavach, the ministry has also sanctioned a modern electronic interlocking system to be installed at seven stations within the Solapur Division. This project, costing Rs 209 crore, is viewed as a crucial upgrade that will reinforce railway signalling infrastructure, and it is anticipated to facilitate the successful integration and functioning of the Kavach system.

Upgrades in Electric Traction and Road Infrastructure

In addition to the safety enhancements, the Ministry has approved an upgrade of the electric traction system on the 73-route-kilometre Savalyapuram-Guntur section of South Coast Railway. This upgrade, which involves increasing the capacity from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV, comes with an estimated cost of Rs 142 crore. Officials stated this enhancement will enable the railway to meet growing operational demands and enhance the robustness of rail services in the region.

Furthermore, a four-lane road overbridge is set to be constructed at Level Crossing No. 53, located at Km 622-4 on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway. This project will entail a total investment of Rs 133.2295 crore and will be funded in partnership with the state government. The construction of this bridge aims to facilitate more efficient road traffic flow, thereby minimising interference with rail operations and enhancing overall transport connectivity.

Collectively, these initiatives not only signify a commitment to improving rail safety and operational efficiency but also represent a concerted effort by Indian Railways to modernise its infrastructure and ensure the seamless movement of both trains and road traffic across multiple divisions.
