Indian Man Rohan Rane Faces Trial in France for Alleged Sextortion of Underage Girls

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Indian man is currently facing trial in France due to allegations related to his leadership of an online group that purportedly coerced underage girls into sexual activities and acts of self-harm. This trial commenced on Monday, in Paris before a special criminal court, with proceedings being conducted behind closed doors. Rohan Rane, aged 29, is accused of multiple serious charges, including torture or acts of barbarity against minors, organised extortion, and the distribution of child sexual abuse material.

Background and Arrest

Rane initially travelled to France for educational purposes, enrolling at a business school in Antibes before transitioning to a role as a fitness coach. His arrest took place in 2021 following an investigation initiated in November 2020. The inquiry was prompted by a report from the US National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, which highlighted distressing online material involving a 12-year-old girl. French authorities connected Rane to a community allegedly known as CVLT on the Discord messaging platform.

According to reports by Le Monde, this online group is said to have fostered environments that promoted neo-Nazi, racist, and anti-Semitic ideologies while targeting vulnerable teenage girls. Members reportedly utilised “sextortion,” a method that involved coercing victims into providing nude images, subsequently threatening to release the images unless further demands were met. Some victims were allegedly forced to engage in sexual acts or to harm themselves to avoid exposure.

The investigation has revealed the identities of approximately 100 victims spanning various countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Estonia, and the Netherlands. Five women from the United States, aged between 18 and 21, have stepped forward in this case and are set to provide testimonies via video link throughout the trial.

Legal Proceedings and Protection Measures

The Paris court made the decision to hold the trial behind closed doors following a request from US authorities. This precautionary measure was taken in light of concerns regarding potential intimidation of witnesses and victims, as well as reported threats directed towards US prosecutors by alleged members of the group associated with Rane. These protective measures underscore the severity and complexity of the case.

The trial is projected to continue until Friday, and if Rane is convicted of these serious offences, he faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment. The implications of this case extend beyond France, highlighting the international nature of online exploitation and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies across multiple countries to address such crimes.

As the proceedings unfold, the attention remains on the impact this trial may have on survivors and the larger discourse surrounding online safety and the protection of minors. The case reflects increasing concerns about the prevalence of online platforms being misused as venues for exploitation and abuse.
