The Embassy of India in Azerbaijan organised a special yoga session at India House in Baku on Monday as part of the build-up to the International Day of Yoga 2026 celebrations scheduled for June 21.

The event brought together ambassadors, diplomats, a Member of Parliament from Azerbaijan, prominent personalities from various fields, yoga practitioners and members of the Indian diaspora, reflecting the growing popularity of yoga in the country.

The session was conducted by noted Azerbaijani yoga practitioner Irada Aliyeva and featured a series of yoga asanas, including Suryanamaskar, along with pranayama and meditation exercises.

Ambassador Highlights Global Appeal Of Yoga

Addressing the gathering, Indian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Abhay Kumar thanked the participants for their support and emphasised the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of yoga.

He encouraged people to incorporate yoga into their daily lives and noted that the ancient Indian practice had witnessed remarkable global growth since the United Nations designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The ambassador also invited participants to take part in the main International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21.

The annual observance has been celebrated worldwide since 2015 following the adoption of a United Nations resolution initiated by PM Modi.

Cultural Performances Add Colour To Event

Apart from the yoga session, the programme featured live performances by Azerbaijani artists, adding a cultural dimension to the event.

Guests were also treated to Indian cuisine, providing an opportunity to experience India’s culinary traditions alongside its wellness practices.

The combination of yoga, music and food reflected the broader cultural exchanges that have become a key aspect of India’s outreach efforts abroad.

Strengthening India-Azerbaijan Ties Through Wellness

According to the embassy, the initiative forms part of its efforts to promote holistic wellbeing and deepen people-to-people connections between India and Azerbaijan.

Yoga has emerged as one of India’s most recognisable cultural exports and continues to attract growing interest across the world.

With celebrations for the International Day of Yoga approaching, Indian missions in different countries have been organising events aimed at raising awareness about the practice and encouraging wider participation.

The programme at India House in Baku highlighted the role of yoga as a bridge between cultures and underscored the shared emphasis on health, mindfulness and community engagement.
