Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Celebrates International Yoga Day 2026 in Shillong

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh marked the 12th International Day of Yoga by leading a session with approximately 1,000 soldiers from the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army at the Eastern Air Command Headquarters in Shillong, Meghalaya. The event was held on June 21, 2026, as part of nationwide celebrations involving the armed forces and the Ministry of Defence.

In attendance were notable figures including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, and Eastern Air Command Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia. They joined Singh in performing a variety of asanas and breathing exercises, highlighting the significance of yoga practice within military and civilian life.

Soon after the session, Singh addressed the media, describing yoga as a comprehensive science that connects the individual to self, society, and the cosmos. He elaborated on yoga’s role in fostering mental clarity and emotional stability, reaffirming its importance in today’s fast-paced world.

Significance of Yoga on a Global Scale

In a social media post on X, Singh acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in promoting yoga globally. He stated that Modi’s leadership has been instrumental in elevating yoga as a worldwide movement that offers numerous health benefits. Singh articulated that the practice of yoga serves as a symbol of India’s ancient traditions, aiming to enhance the well-being of people everywhere.

During his address, the Defence Minister encouraged the public to adopt yoga as a daily practice. He emphasised that integrating yoga into everyday routines can lead to improved physical health, mental tranquillity, and ultimately contribute to a stronger nation. This reflection on collective well-being echoed throughout the celebrations.

Participants also viewed a live broadcast of Prime Minister Modi’s speech from the iconic Red Road in Kolkata. This connection reinforced the unity of purpose among all those who participated in various yoga sessions across the country.

Wider Participation in Yoga Day Celebrations

Yoga Day was celebrated in various locations, showcasing the versatility and enthusiasm of defence personnel. For instance, Sanjay Seth took part in an event at Swarn Jyanti Dikshant Mandap, Ranchi University, where he stressed the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life. He noted its capacity to foster calmness in both favourable and challenging situations, reinforcing its transformative nature.

In New Delhi, Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani initiated the celebrations at the National War Memorial, attended by senior officers and their families, signifying the integration of yoga into all levels of the armed forces.

Further, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, along with other senior officials, participated in a yoga session at the office of the Controller General of Defence Accounts in New Delhi. The theme for this year, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing,’ resonated with over 10,000 officials of the Defence Accounts Department who participated in a virtual movement advocating the promotion of yoga for holistic well-being.
