India U-19 Names Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan as Captain for Sri Lanka Series

The CSR Journal Magazine

Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan’s journey to becoming captain of the India Under-19 cricket team is marked by his early leadership qualities. Ajay Singh, the principal of The Scindia School in Gwalior, observed these traits when Yashbardhan participated in team discussions during cricket match planning. Singh recounts how the young cricketer would engage with team members, discussing potential solutions when challenges arose, indicating a natural inclination towards leadership.

On 11 June, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Yashbardhan’s appointment as captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which includes three one-day matches and two multi-day fixtures from 4 July. The announcement reached Yashbardhan through Vijay Prakash Sharma, secretary of the Gwalior Division Cricket Association, followed by calls to his father, Anami Singh Chauhan, and childhood coach Lavkesh Choudhary.

Emotions ran high for Anami when he received the news, as he articulated the years of nurturing a dream that had seemingly materialised. With a background as a leg-spinner, Anami Chauhan held a deep connection to the sport and always aspired for a family member to achieve recognition in cricket.

Support from Family and Community

Yashbardhan’s passion for cricket has been evident since his early years. His father noted that whenever he missed a match, the disappointment was palpable and indicative of his unquenchable desire to play. Meanwhile, his mother, Reena Chauhan, observed his resilience through injuries, always encouraging him to return to the field after setbacks.

When the news of his captaincy broke, Reena’s initial reaction was not to share the news but rather to express gratitude to God for the accomplishment. This heartfelt moment underscored the family’s dedication and commitment to Yashbardhan’s cricketing journey.

Hailing from the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh, an area often associated more with folklore than cricket, Yashbardhan’s achievements stand out. Ajay Singh emphasised that the inhabitants of this region have historically demonstrated a fighting spirit and perseverance, traits that resonate with Yashbardhan’s character.

Rise Through Local Competitions

The talent of Yashbardhan was spotlighted at a young age when, as a 13-year-old, he scored 425 off 248 balls and 235 off 166 balls in the Under-13 inter-divisional AW Kanmadikar Trophy. This spectacular performance caught the attention of Chandrakant Pandit, then coach of Madhya Pradesh, who was compelled to witness Yashbardhan’s prowess first-hand. During their meeting, Yashbardhan scored an impressive 391 runs, solidifying his reputation as a promising young cricketer.

His time at The Scindia School further refined his skills, with the institution hosting the competitive HH Maharaja Madhavrao Memorial Cricket Tournament. Principal Singh noted Yashbardhan’s strategic thinking during the tournament planning meetings. Yashbardhan’s ability to stay calm and articulate options under pressure set him apart from his peers.

Beyond his cricketing abilities, Yashbardhan displayed a commitment to mentoring younger students, enhancing their skills in both batting and bowling. Ajay Singh remarked upon Yashbardhan’s willingness to assist others, indicating a rather remarkable character that extends beyond the cricket pitch.

Looking Ahead at the Upcoming Tour

As Yashbardhan prepares for the Sri Lanka tour, which commences with a camp on 23 June before the squad departs on 30 June, the anticipation is palpable among supporters in Gwalior. At 17, he has completed his Class 12 exams, balancing his academic commitments with an emerging cricket career.

Prospects for Yashbardhan’s future in cricket appear bright, with expectations of tougher matches and larger challenges ahead. The local community believes firmly in his potential and commitment to succeed. Ajay Singh encapsulated this belief, expressing hope that Yashbardhan would transition from wearing the Scindia blue to the India blue jersey, contingent on continued hard work and divine grace.

This remarkable journey is just beginning, showcasing the aspirations and perseverance that define both Yashbardhan and his community.
