India Targets 200,000 Foreign Students Annually by 2030 Under Expanded ‘Study in India’ Initiative

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has announced a target to boost the number of international students in its higher education institutions to 200,000 annually by the year 2030. This announcement was made by officials from the Education Ministry, highlighting the country’s commitment to enhancing its appeal as a destination for global learners. Presently, approximately 50,000 foreign students enroll in Indian institutions each year.

Collaboration with Universities and States

An official statement indicated that the government has intensified its outreach efforts under the ‘Study in India’ initiative, collaborating closely with both universities and state authorities to achieve this ambitious target. The official noted, “By 2030, we want to bring two lakh international students to India annually. Currently, about 50,000 students arrive each year. We have been making strong efforts over the past six to seven months to expedite this process.”

Infrastructure Development for Incoming Students

Discussions are ongoing with various central and state universities, including notable institutions such as Delhi University, to expand capacity and develop adequate infrastructure, particularly hostel facilities for foreign students. The official emphasized, “Hostel facilities and support systems for students must be robust. We have also been in dialogue with state governments, as many of these international students will also be enrolling in state universities.”

Involvement of Foreign Universities

The official further indicated that foreign universities establishing campuses in India will be permitted to admit international students, thereby broadening options for prospective learners. The ‘Study in India’ team is in the process of devising an outreach plan targeting stakeholders across multiple countries to attract a greater number of students.

Role of State Governments

This initiative was a focal point during the recent Chief Secretaries’ Conference held in January, where state governments were tasked with playing a crucial role in accommodating the anticipated influx of international students. Many of these students are expected to choose state universities in addition to central institutions.

Current Statistics and Future Engagement

In a previous update to the Rajya Sabha, the government revealed that there are currently about 72,218 foreign students in India representing nearly 200 countries. Addressing additional queries during Question Hour, the Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, stated that various measures are being implemented to enhance engagement with international universities and students.
