India Skills Report 2026: Uttar Pradesh Leads Youth Employability, Maharashtra Ranks Second

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Skills Report 2026 indicates that Uttar Pradesh has achieved the highest youth employability rate among Indian states, standing at 78.64 per cent. Maharashtra follows closely with a rate of 75.42 per cent, while Karnataka reports 73.85 per cent. Kerala and Delhi round out the top five, achieving 72.16 per cent and 71.25 per cent, respectively. The rankings focus on job readiness rather than the sheer number of available jobs, suggesting that Uttar Pradesh’s position reflects effective skill development among its young workforce.

National Employability Rates Increase

India’s overall employability rate has improved, as revealed by the report, which places the figure at 56.35 per cent for 2026. This marks a rise from the 54.81 per cent recorded in 2025 and a significant increase from 46.2 per cent in 2022. The report attributes this upward trend to enhanced digital adoption and the growing importance of skills related to artificial intelligence. Among various age groups, individuals aged 22 to 25 present the highest employability at 75.7 per cent, followed by those aged 26 to 29 at 71.79 per cent, and candidates aged 18 to 21 at 71.38 per cent.

Furthermore, the report indicates that youth employment is not solely reliant on the availability of positions but rather on the readiness of candidates to fulfil the demands of evolving job markets. This shift underscores the significance of skills centred around technology and digital literacy.

Technology Graduates Demonstrate Strong Employability

In terms of educational qualifications, graduates in technology-related fields exhibit high employability rates. Computer Science graduates report an impressive 80 per cent employability, followed by Information Technology at 78 per cent and Instrumentation Engineering at 77 per cent. Electronics and Communication Engineering graduates stand at 75 per cent, while Mechanical Engineering graduates present a lower rate of 63 per cent. The report highlights a sustained demand for expertise in artificial intelligence, data analytics, cloud computing, and cybersecurity, which are integral to the increasingly technology-driven job landscape.

The findings reflect a notable trend wherein candidates with technical qualifications show enhanced job readiness, aligning with industry needs. This emphasis on technical skills signals a progressive shift towards more specialised training and education in response to market requirements.

Impact of AI and Evolving Employment Structures

The India Skills Report 2026 also explores the broader implications of artificial intelligence and changing employment mechanisms. The report highlights its theme around gig work, freelancing, AI-supportive roles, remote employment, and entrepreneurship. Projections indicate that India’s gig and freelance workforce could expand to 23.5 million by 2030, with project-based hiring noted to have surged by 38 per cent year on year. Such a landscape is increasingly indicative of the shifting nature of employment.

Currently, India is estimated to contribute 16 per cent of the global pool of AI talent, with expectations that the number of AI specialists will reach 1.25 million by 2027. The positions associated with AI are transforming job definitions, emphasising the importance of adaptability and ongoing skills development.

As young professionals navigate this changing environment, the report underscores the necessity of technical capabilities and digital literacy, which are essential for achieving readiness for employment in a modern context. The emphasis is clear: while traditional degrees remain valuable, the ability to apply those qualifications in new and innovative ways is increasingly significant.
